Original timing belt v70 awd ?? V70-XC70

A former Volvo mechanic said that on a 98 Volvo installled Continental timing belts.
Mine says Mitsubishi, and is in good shape, I have no idea when it was replaced. I have 76000 miles and need to do the water pump. Should I Buy a kit and replace everything, or look and evaluate as I go?
Thanks for your insights

The Tbelt replacement for the 1998 engine is 70K miles. Without a sticker on the computer box????

Is the water pump leaking already? They usually last longer than that, like close to 200K miles. By all means, if the pump gets replaced, replace both belts and the tensioner roller. The hydraulic tensioner does not need to be replaced.

Please, use OEM antifreeze. I suggest replacing the thermostat with OEM also while the system is drained.

Cheap peace of mind maintenance, if you DIY.

Computer box for Engine i.d? V70-XC70

Did not look on computer box, looked on plastic cowl over t belt.
Looking at Ben's repair video from fcp euro. Really helpful.
Klaus you are so popular here that you should do some
      Videos too. Why not?

I use 2 hands to work on my cars and both of them are usually covered in grease. Besides, I don't have a video recording device and no way am I going to upload some drivel on You tube.

Riverbend has a good point, some of the later year 1998's have the new style tensioner. Your best bet is to remove the belt cover and take a look. The old style is a black shock, the new style is rectangular. The new style tensioner needs to be replaced with the belt.

Is there absolutely no documentation with this car? Some times there is a receipt in the glove box showing the town. Then look for a near by Volvo dealer and call and ask if the car was serviced there. They can look up the records.

          Serpentine tool V70-XC70

          Thanks Klaus,
Took off the right wheel and looked under, mine had the rounder stock style tensioner,
          So ordered based on that.
What about the serpentine tool, some discussion about that on the boards, any first hand experience
          with that ?
Grease on the hands is what we need to see in a YouTube video, no one ever shows how lousy
          It can all be.
As for the dealer he went out of business....

            Serpentine tool V70-XC70

It's always nice to have the correct tool for the job, but how often are you going to remove the serp belt? I remember seeing a picture someone posted, a 3/8 ratchet and a couple of coins to fill the gap worked nicely. Use a small allen wrench or nail to insert into the tensioner while it is pulled back.

Which reminds me, my serp belt is all cracked and worn...

              Serpentine tool adapting V70-XC70

Looks to me like I need a square 5/8" drive into this female plug ,which has some special corners.
This device is a coiled spring, so you are using the nail to keep it in place, while you remove the belt.
Not exactly sure where you place the nail, but will look more carefully.
No danger of the thing completely coming unsprung?

              I

I think I just used a 1/2" breaker bar to relieve the tension on the serpentine belt. It was close enough. On Madeline's 850 I used a piece of square stock and a big Crescent wrench.

There is a small hole to accept the nail/hex wrench, try it for fitment before pulling the tensioner back. If you 'unspring' it, it just makes it harder to pull back during installation.

No one has a 5/8 square ratchet, which is why a crow's foot or a couple of coins to fit the slack is used.

    Original timing belt v70 awd ?? V70-XC70

Sixteen year old car, with 75k and no service records. Are you keeping the car?

If you're already in there, replace everything. And new coolant. Set a benchmark, keep records and follow the factory maintenance schedule forward. Breaking down's not worth saving a few bucks.

Original timing belt v70 awd ?? Now 76000 miles V70-XC70

This car when I bought it had low miles , really lucky it has not killed me in the repair dept.
But I did drop the rear drive shaft as the differential was making a whirring sound.
Went away on removal, had that work done at a transmission shop for a $100.
Miss the awd ,as it saved my neck in some bad snow, but this car is way more costly then my old 240 wagon. I like working on my Volvo, but everything tends to get out of hand, and before you know it I'm leaking oil all over the place. Maybe someday I 'll get ahead on these 15-20 yr cars.
I cannot really afford a mechanic.

Not knowing how old the tensioner is would lead me to replace it and the belt while in there for the water pump.
