Car creaking when turning - need help. C70 1988

Hi folks,

I've had this problem for a while so I'm getting worried about it. Anyways, whenever I turn the car left or right, I get this creaking noise coming from the front of the car and the steering whell shakes a little. I'm afraid it has something to do with the steering column. Can anybody enlighten me what this might be? I'm going to turn it into the dealer tomorrow but I would like to get a feel on what this might be. Thanks for your input.

Mike H.

On the S and V models the most common cause of this is the

steering stops. This may be the problem if it occurs at

full-lock when turning the steering wheel and backing off

the wheel angle a bit causes it to stop. This site shows

you how to lube the sterring stops:

      Hello Gents,

I am now getting the creaking also. This seems to be

a spring time phenomenon. My creaking happens at

about the 75% turn radius so I am wondering if this

is still probably the wheel stops. I am going to Pep

Boys to get the axil grease which Volvo speed says to

apply the the stop pads. If this is not the problem

could it then be the stablizer link bushings which

the photo shows closer to the firewall. Dealer replaced

      them last year.

If the creak is comming from the stibilzer link bushings

is there any lubricant I can apply without fear of dry-out.

I don't feel like going to the dealer every year to have

a stablizer service. Also are there many grease points

on the 70 series cars which we can lub ourselves?

      Any help appreciated.

      Thanks, RD 99' c70

Interesting , I just bought a 2000 C-70 conv. with 12K miles and I heard the same noise when turning left. It also sounded like the stop pad. Hope it's not a CV already.

    Mike,

Just curious the root cause.... I have a 2000 C70 HPT coupe. We had the noise on an 80 that was the stabilizer bar end link (sway bar end link). We alro had a wierd clunk that was the top strut mounting point bushing. Both of these were at about 60,000. Hope yours was minor problem and parts were in stock...

    Hi !

I had the same problem with my S 70 1999. I went to the dealer's last week

and they first put grease everywhere at the top and the bottom of the

McPherson strut on the left side (that is where the noise was coming

from), but it did not change anything. Then, they discovered that the

noise was coming from the stab link ( I do not know what it is ) at the

bottom of the strut, behind the wheel. They changed it in fifteen minutes

and that was it: no more problem.

I hope this can reassure you. It was nothing dangerous.
