Power Steering Fluid V70-XC70 1999

The owner’s manual for my 99 V70 says to use ATF in the power steering. But, it does not have ATF in it now. The fluid in it looks like it was probably clear when new, and is now kind of a dark clear.

Any idea what it would be? I have seen clear steering fluid, but I am thinking there is more than one type. I don’t think my car is new enough to use the very fussy fluid that is maybe something like Pentoison (?? or I think it was something like that unless I am mixing up my machinery).

I thought I would try to change it out when I replace the serp belt, but don’t know what to replace it with. I am thinking that throwing ATF in now might not be a good idea since it is used to what it has now.

Thanks,
Charley

I bought LDAS recently, the green stuff. My present stuff is quite clearish and light brown. If it were ATF fluid then it would be dark brown and thick coloured. So, I reckon mine is the green which is really bright coloured new, that has deteriroated lots.
I want to flush it soon but don't know how to turn off the engine start so I can crank but not fire the engine. Now that it is the weekend I might ask about that.
Also need to confirm it's take off the return hose to flush. That must be the top one on the fluid reservoir? Then crank and pump out fluid. What I want to know is can I just use a container and hold it there to catch the fluid, people talk about using different kinds of hoses and putting into little specially prepared containers which I think is overdoing it. Then turn the steering to bleed. If that is correct then I really want to do mine. The fluid has been bought for a week waiting.
    So,
Do not use ATF if yours is the light almost see through colour fluid. I read that ATF will rot the parts over time. Check fluid with a cotton bud or drops against white paper.

      Andy,

Yes, you want to remove the fluid from the return side so that it is not so pressurized. You should be able to tell which is which because the pressure side will be a more hardy connection. I've never done the flushing by cranking the engine. I have done it by slacking or removing the belt and spinning the pully by hand. But, I was doing that on cars that did not have the single serpentine belts.

You just might have PS fluid. Either ATF or PS fluid is acceptable and will work quite nicely. Your car should not have Pentosin.

If you decide to flush it sometime, I suggest using a synthetic ATF or PS fluid of the same viscosity.
