About to change oil for first time 850 1994

I'm about to change my oil for the first time and I was reading through some posts and I read that you need 6.1 quarts of oil re-fill the engine. But when I look through the cars manual it says to use 5.6 quarts of oil. Why the 6.1 quarts in posts? How much oil do I really need? I have a 1994 850 Turbo. Thanks in advance for the help...

Scott

Re: About to change oil for first time 850 1994

    Scott,

Since you have the turbo it requires 6.1 qts of oil. If the engine prev had "regular oil" or dyno oil and you are changing to synthetic I would recommend draining the oil cooler as well. In fact, I drain my oil cooler each and every time. No since contaminating 6 qts of new oil with 1 of old, now is there.

So what to do. I will assume that you can do a simple oil change. Remember to use a new oil drain plug gasket (aluminum only, copper takes more torque to seal and will eventually strip the threads). Aluminum is designed for 26 ftlbs of torque. Warm the car, drain the oil, remove the old filter, drain the oil cooler and reconnect the lines, replace the filter with a new one, replace the drain plug (new gasket), replace oil.

Draining the oil cooler is easy and sometimes a bit messy. Please refer to Volvospeed Bay 13 (link at bottom) for info. It is best done with a pair of split ring pliers to open the connector just a bit.

Best of luck. Any questions - email.

    Andrew

Re: About to change oil for first time 850 1994

If I drain the oil cooler I have to add about 1 extra quart of oil right, making it 7 qts? Or is that 6.1 with the drainage of the oil cooler? And do I have to fill the oil cooler back up directly (don't even know if it can be done) or can I just add the extra quart in the top like normal? Thanks again for the help.

PS-- I've always used Mobile 1.

        Scott,

You just add engine oil through the top of the engine as normal. I generally, refill with 6 qts then run the engine for 5 min to ensure the cooler is refilled and the new oil is heated. Then recheck oil level.

        Best of Luck
