A/C Woes 850 1995

Has anyone had high repair bills to fix a leak in the 850 A/C system? After trying the tracer dye route and not finding the leak, the dealer has quoted a 2-day job to find the leak that will require considerable disassembly of the front end! Estimated cost, $1100. I've had this verified by a second opinion by a reputable independent A/C shop. Do I have any options?

It is for sure an evaporator if you see small oily dots on inside of your windshield, they are usually right by the windshield vents and you can see them on a sunny day. I am caliming it is a cure but try this... put a A/C sealant in, let it run for two days and then top off with 134 and oil. Damage to evap occurs due to the water condensation, so alway run you fan at least on 1, never put in "Off" especially if you just turned off your A/C. I hope your leak is small, otherwise it is $1100. I am facing the same issue, but I will try CryoChem before I replace evap.Good luck.

If it is an evaporator, there is a guy on Ebay who sells the OEM one for 179 bucks...it's a common problem.

When you had the system charged up with the dye, how long before the AC went out again? If it didnt last long, then I think you're stuck with the repair cost, which seemed about right. If it lasted a long time, maybe just recharge it and hope the recharge lasts as long as the last. Eventually you'll have to get it fixed though..
