How much turbo "online" time is safe?

I posted some of these questions in deeper thread in the waste gate post without any response so I figured I'd try to be more specific. If you respond, please respond to this set of questions. Thanks

__________________________

Last night I did the little waste gate trick, with 4.5 turns of the connector.

Now the turbo comes online much faster and the peak pressure is higher. In normal traffic the turbo comes online, just barely, with a non-aggressive, normal traffic start from a dead stop. It also comes online when accelerating from a steady speed to a higher speed. And it even just barely comes online when on cruise control while heading up a mild incline of some length. It can stay this way for the length of the incline. When I say "barely" I mean that the needle just touches the white line to goes into it a couple needle widths, on the stock turbo boost gauge.

Here are my questions.

* Is it safe for the engine to have the turbo come online so easily?

* Do I run the risk of cooking the pistons at this level?

* Will the EC compensate after some more driving?

* There is some mild lag between 3500 an 4000 rpm. Is this normal?

I'd really appreciate some advice on this one.

Thanks in advance.

Re: How much turbo "online" time is safe?

If you were pushing enough boost to do damage, you would have set of warning lights already.

Regarding the cruise control, bone stock, without this mod, my 94' 855T will push a little boost going uphill as well, so don't worry about that.

    Regarding your 4 questions.

Yes, as long as no idiot lights come on. If they do regarding the turbo, the first thing that will happen is the ECU will shut the turbo off completely.

No, you do not run the risk of damaging your pistons.

Maybe, the ECU on the 850 as well as many other cars is highly adaptable and may eventually change parameters back to before this mod occuring. But being a mechanical adjustment, it probably won't happen.

Yes, this is VERY normal. The lag in power between 3500-4000rpm is something I just absolutely detest. It occurs because Volvo programmed the engine back off power at this rpm range for fear of pre ignition. Basically, they thought the intercooler was inadequate, so instead of using a better intercooler, they backed off power in this rpm range. There is nothing you can do about this except for chipping/ecu reprogramming. And honestly, Volvo played it WAY too safe in this regard. If you actually took a look at the parameters, Volvo REALLY played it safe, and in successive redesigns, they took better advantage of the power available in this rpm range without increasing the intercooler ability.

Great response. Basicly I wanted to decide whether to keep the mod and based on this, it's staying until lights come on.

It also sounds like an ECU (probably IPD) is a potenital next step for hp and torque. I've done cat-back with a 2.5" daim suppression and have a turbo down and a "racing" (what-ever-that-means) cat selected.

      Thanks again for the input.

        What is a "daim suppression"

Do you mean 2.5" cat-back with a down pipe and race catalytic convertor? What diameter piping is the downpipe?

Re: How much turbo "online" time is safe? 850 1996

Yes sorry. "daim" was supposed to = "diameter". Silly fingers.

I started at the back, replaced the muffler up to the stock cat with 2.5 piping and a "Hayame" 2.5 suppression muffler. The muffler is very close to ... ok, it is a "rice-rocket" thing but I got it used (tested in the shop and it wasn't loud enough for some Acura CL owner) and it actually looks pretty cool. The guys and the race shop I work with ICCRacing, said "phat"... oh no:-)

The tip is like 5" round and the muffler about 10" diameter of stainless showing in the back. It either makes people laugh and be embarrassed for the driver, me, or they think it's "cool" But hey, it works great. Just like straight but sounds really deep.

Anyway, the down pipe and new cat are being saved for now.

Any input from people as to what are the best makes for the Down Pipe and racing cat would be great. Though I bet there's a bunch of that on the site just waiting to be searched for.

          Thanks

Hey, rice ain't all bad if it's done right. I've seen many polished stainless steel mufflers rear mounted on 850s and _70s that looked great. In fact, I prefer the look of rear mounted mufflers over the hidden like on our volvos.

But, the 5' tip sounds like it looks too ricey for my preference, but hey, chacun son gout.

As for downpipes, my opinion, custom. Most mod shops are good with handshake lifetime warranties as long as you don't *huck them up yourself. As for cats, as long as you go with a stainless steel, mesh style race cat, they are pretty much all the same.

Let's see, you adjusted your turbo with no knowledge whatsoever of the affects? Makes sense to me...

Re: How much turbo "online" time is safe?

hey like this is what most guys do

like put a 3" pipe on like the down pipe on like the turbo output

like i suggest to use a like mandrel bent pipe

like i also think it should be like smooth inside like no weld seams so like then the flow is like smooth and like it will produce like more power like for sure

seriously a 3" pipe will make a BIG difference

      hope this helps

      like kgb
