New trouble V70-XC70

Hello,

99 V70 is developing two new issues.
1st, when i come up to a red light, the idle drops very low, then stabilizes.
2nd, at highway speed, when i try and accelerate to pass, i get an intermittent misfire or stumble. around town no miss.

Things I have done related to this problem.

new Idle control valve

new fuel filter

new plugs, the center electrodes were quit worn. middle Cyl. had some white fluffy stuff on it and the porcelain at the base was a bit brown.

Clean MAS

Flushed tranny with 3 Gals. ( at first I thought the stumble was tranny slip)

I would like to further test the MAS but dont know how.

My recalcitrant idle may have been fixed by a TB clean. It would drop 400 revs for a second coming up to intersections etc and it would often feel like a stall.
Also the plug gap played a significant part in reducing the problem. I found a plug out by circa 1 mm and when I put back in the cylinder lost at least half its misses.
I must inspect my vacuum lines, too. Do some of them come off for inspection or can they stay where they are?

The straight part of the vacuum lines are normally good. Lightly pushing on the elbows will reveal cracks and holes.

There are only a few things in life that I feel I can't do. Tile a bathroom, and find vacuum leaks. Where on earth do you begin.

I would love to tell you exactly where to look, but Volvo changes the vacuum routing annually, if not more often. There are 4 different diagrams for the 850 NA engine and none of the diagrams look like my car!

My ETM has the white label, is that good or bad?

It is amazing that it lasted this long. The white label is not the one you want. Most of them failed early and often.

Unless a previous owner sent it off to xemodex.com, in which case it will last forever.

Previous owner was my sister, she did not send it off.
I might call them tomorrow and see about sending it in.
I would love to go beyond 300K in this.
Only annoying thing about this car is the rattling/squeaking dash.

Don't throw more parts at it yet. It is possible that you have a vacuum leak and those are hard to find, especially the vacuum elbow that goes to #1 intake runner.

Before you come to a stop, try shifting to N and see if the engine behaves. It could be the converter lock up solenoid is getting sticky. Not much to do there except keeping the ATF clean.

The white stuff on #3 plug is puzzling. The brown color on the ceramic above the plug could be from oil that came out of the oil filler cap (old, hard gasket needs to be replaced). Still, time for a warm engine compression test to rule out any potential headgasket leakage.

How many miles on the engine? Is this a turbo?

265,000 Non turbo. I am thinking might be time for the ETM.
I will check the slow idle by throwing into Neutral before stopping.

Failing ETMs start by having eratic idle and otherwise functioning normally. I assume you have a yellow label ETM.

With that many miles, check the lower injector seals by lightly spraying water or butane on the seals and see if that makes a difference.

A dirty throttle body could be a problem, but a vacuum leak is more likely.
