1998 V70 (Base) Subframe question... V70-XC70 1998

All,

Is the front subframe which is connected to the frame via rubber bushings supposed to sit tight up against the frame or is there to be room for it to move about?

I ask this as I have a "clunk" both front and rear that I am trying to search and destroy on and the last time I was lowering the car I noticed this that while jacking on the subframe to raise the car I notice that it moved quite a bit, maybe a 1/4" till it met the frame and then the car moved upwards. Is this normal.

Also in case you are wondering, I have replaced both front and rear struts and shocks and their ancillary parts about a year ago.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

1998 V70 (Base) Subframe question... V70-XC70 1998

I took a quick look at my 850, same as yours, and cannot figure out how you can jack the car and see the subframe/frame at the same time. And I have long arms.

My 2 jack stands are tall, for SUVs, so I always jack the car at one of the 4 subframe bolts and then slide the stand under the subframe.

BTW, jacking up the subframe to lift the frame SHOULD compress any rubber bits as they are not meant to take the weight of the entire vehicle.

Look for rattles elsewhere.

1998 V70 (Base) Subframe question... V70-XC70 1998

"New a year ago" doesn't rule out worn out rubber strut mounts, sway bar bushings etc. There's some junk parts around.

Does the engine hop around when you gun the gas? Too much movement
and you should be checking motor mounts.

1998 V70 (Base) Subframe question... V70-XC70 1998

Subframe bushings are pretty hardy in their up/down movement. IPD has a bushing plug that gets inserted to keep the sideways movement to a minimum, but that is not a noise issue.

I suggest looking at the delta link bushings at the rear, those do need replacing. It is not a fun job.

As for the front, I would look at control arm bushings as you have replaced everything else.

1998 V70 (Base) Subframe question... V70-XC70 1998

I'm gonna take a look at the suspension this weekend and see what I see.

How many miles were on your car when you did the Delta link in the rear? Did you do all the bushings in the rear or just the Delta link one?

I've got 167K on mine and I am starting to think that I need to do both front and rear suspension parts as well as engine mounts.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Matt
