Help with Oxygen Sensors 850 1995

I am wondering if anyone has had any luck with using a O2 sensor from a different vehicle and just splicing in the wires. I don't want to pay 214.00 for a new one. I am getting the code 1-5-3 rear o2 sensor missing or no signal. If anyone has had any luck with doing that please let me know. Or if any major problems.

    I have had luck doing this recently to a 92 240, with no advers affects, and it turned my check engine light off. I don't know if this application works for you, but I used a bosch sensor from a 89 Mustang 5.0. This car actually has four sensors, the only difrence being wire lenth. Do be sure to soder conections. A weak signal will result in check engine light. Also shrink wrap to keep our water. Good luck

    Tony, make sure there isn't a problem that is causing your O2 sensor to go bad. Otherwise you are only treating the symptom.

    I haven't done this yet but there are universal O2 sensors available from auto parts stores that you just splice into the existing wiring. I would get a Bosch sensor, I think they are the original supplier.

    Steps:

    1. remove old sensor and disconnect from wire harness.

    2. cut and splice (crip connector and solder is a nearly permanent connection) new sensor and old wire harness connector (the part from the old sensor).

    3. heat shrink around the splice.

    4. install new sensor and connect to harness

    I am sure there are sensors from production vehicles that also fit. Then you get the vehicle side harness/o2 sensor from a junk yard and splice that into the Volvo's O2 side harness connector and you have a plug-n-play application.

      I have been researching alternatives to OEM sensors and found a couple of interesting things: all Bosch universal sensor that local store sells are different in size and exsposure of the actual sensing element. It directly affects how well it measures. Secondly you have to check if you car has an air pump and if you do, I believe you are out of luck and will have to buy OEM one. Check for it under driver's side headlight, you will see hoses go into electrical pump. They claim air pump on cold starts affects mixture so that it may skew your non-OEM O2 sensor measurement. (I am not quite sure how it affects it, air pump was design to keep mixture leaner and exaust cleaner on start, I will appreciate if Volvo techs speak to that).

      Anyway, right now I am sitting on a fence, my car is 1994 and though it doesn't register a code it doesn't give me a very good mileage and some posts say that it is a good idea to replace front sensor at 60K. Is that true?

      Just to add to that, you need to use high temp solder. Silver works very well and conducts well. I think most silver solder has a melt point around the mid 400s, but thats just from memory.
