2003 V40 5 Door wagon.. S40-V40 2003

Looking at 03 C40 5 door wagon.. Price $3991 106000 miles
Looks ok for age cosmetically and mechanically.. Problem is.. engine showing check engine light with three codes . Think first letter is P 0170 0507 0442.

Does not seem to be a popular model... Needs some fixing up . body shows no signs of accidents but needs painting. Guess Florida sun has taken its toll,no apparent signs of leakage just cosmetic abuse over time.. Tires need to be changed.Number of owners unknown.. Any feedback on this model, price being asked, what codes may mean and degree of difficulty in fixing. ???

The codes are: fuel mix too lean, idle too high, and small leak in EVAP emmissions control.

The first 2 are related to each other, it could be a fuel pump or a cracked vacuum line. The third is probably a cracked vacuum line by the fuel tank.

If the paint looks like it has been parked in the Fla sun for 10 years without any wax, knock at least 2K off the price.

These little wagons, designed for 2 people and 1 dog, are not in demand and should be priced accordingly. If you found this at a used car dealer, ask for a Carfax. If they won't supply one, just leave the lot.

Remember, a Volvo dealer will charge $100 to inspect a car and tell you what is wrong with it - more than you ever wanted to know! But it is a good base to bargain with.

Sounds like a dealer price to me, no service records, unknown number of owners, some obvious issues, 1000 bucks if, for some reason, you like these models. You can find a good V70 of the same vintage for this money. All quirks well understood, seems like a better way to go to me; however, this is just my opinion, not necessarily a fact.

It's the wagon version of an S40. I kind of like the look.

Like any European car, parts are getting expensive and at 11 years old, things are going to need replacement. You are also looking at a timing belt service at that mileage.

If you have to pay someone to work on it, get your wallet out. They take a lot of patience to work on as things are packed in there and there's not a lot of room to work.

Factoring in the problems you already know about and what the value of the car is when in good shape, I would not pay more than $800 - $1000 tops. These cars are not popular and thus you can usually pick them up pretty cheap. As long as you don't mind wrenching on them yourself, they can be well-bought.
