Car died and won't start 850 98

My wife was stopped at a light and her red 850 turbo died and now will not start. Starter and lights all come on. cranks real strong. some very small "kicks". feels like no fuel. 60K on car. never any problem before this. It was pretty hot today and the fuel was very low (light came on). dumped in 5 gallons and waited for it to cool off suspecting a vapor lock. I also suspect a fuse (I had an '83 245DL with the infamous fuse problem). any similar stories with a fix?

Thank you for your comments and responses. Traced it all down to the fuel pump. I have a generic OBDII scantool and it did not show any problems. I also have an alldata.com account for my car and the troubleshooting instructions say to test the fuel pump first. sure enough, the pump was not running when I bypasses the pump relay per the instructions. $300 later (dealer parts guy gave me 10% off) and about 1.5 hours for R&R and I was back up and running by Sat. 2pm. The dealer sells the complete pump assembly (inlet screen, plastic housing, etc.). The real pump is buried inside all the plastic. But I could not find just the pump, only the complete assembly from the dealer. I guess if I looked around for the pump Bosch p/n, this would have been a cheaper route.

Re: Car died and won't start 850 97

Friday, May 4th, 9PM PST. True story. I swear. Mine also just died. I was sitting on a red light waiting to make a left. Then I went about 800 feet and then the car jerked like it was out of gas. It was 300 feet from my house. I was lucky and just pushed the wagon home.

So, I checked the fuse box, but all is good. I have very little car experience, and this is my first Volvo, so I did the only thing I was good at, checked the Internet for info.

Again, I gotta swear on a stack of "holy books", this just happened to me tonight.

I thought that I may have run out of gas even though it said I had 3 gallons, so i tried to press my ear near the gas tank nozzle and shook the car to see it I can hear any gas splashing in the tank. I'll try again tomorrow, but I'm really anxious to get some clues. I don't want to have to spend an arm and a leg to get this fixed.

Re: Car died and won't start 850 97

Heh you guys, this is 99% definately a fuel related problem. All 850 turbos have a computer on the dash the same as my volvo 440 turbo did. They work on the same principle that the computer must be calibrated to the fuel tank! If it is not calibrated then it cannot possibly know how much fuel is left in the tank. All the msgs i have read related to this topic, in all cases you have all had low fuel readings or even low fuel warning lights on. The same happened to me when my computer told me i had 20 miles on the current fuel left in the tank. It then conked out 50m from a garage. Lucky for me, i pushed it to the garage and filled up and after hesitating (as it would do because all the fuel lines were dry!) it eventually started and drove as per normal.

I am a mechanic and i can only give one piece of advise. Don't let your fuel tanks go dry or even too low as this can cause problems later in life ie wair in the fuel pump as the fuel acts as a lubricant.

As i understand it your trip computer works out how muck fuel you have in the tank by calculating the following factors: Size of tank (73 ltrs), average mpg. It uses these to give you a fairly accurate reading on the display of how much fuel is left in the tank and how far you can drive on the remaining fuel.

You must also consider that if you are very low on fuel and you stop on a hill facing up or down then depending on where the pickup pipe is in the fuel tank will depend on the fuel gauge saying 'yes you have fuel' but it has all slopped to the front/rear of the fuel tank and cannot be picked up by the fuel strainer. Therefore your gauge says eg 3 gallons but none can be picked up so the cars stalls and will not sart again until either filled up or on the opposite slope or level ground.

Im not sure if this is the problem but check that the flexable-looking pipe connected to your air filter box is properly connected and that there

are no cracks in it .This generally cracks when its exposed to extreme

climate changes or through age.But its worth giving it a try because it is easy to check it.
