V70 block heaters discontinued, any for sale? V70-XC70 2004

Just confirmed with 3 Volvo dealers one of them Tasca that block heaters and the 110VAC cable are discontinued.

Does anyone have a source or want to sell a used OEM block heater and cable?

Fits 2004 V70, 2.4 litre, M56 5 speed.

I need 2 sets.

thanks

Just installed a pan heater. Dead simple, super thin, half the price of an OEM block heater and best of all can mount on the drivers side of oil pan so it warms the manual trans fluid also.

Made in the USA also. That's rare.

I quit looking for the Volvo bolt on block heater and bought 250 watt glue on pad heaters. Same ones used on VW TDIs.

Almost half the price, hope they are salt resistant.

I found this, but I do not know how it works.

I think that one ties into the coolant lines and is similar to a piston pump. It forces heated coolant through the engine. I've seen one about 30 years ago.

According to a guy in Fairbanks, Alaska, he uses a heater pad that sticks on to the bottom of the block and another that sticks on to the tranny. I forgot his nickname, he has a 1998 R and frequents Volvospeed and sometimes Matthews.

Each pad uses the same wattage as a 100W light bulb.

That type is what all the jobbers sell. I don't like it due to possible salt issues and that it is glued in place.

If I can't drum up the OEM type it looks like the only option.

      thanks

The ebay link has the old frost plug style. I don't know if the 5 cyl V70 engine has frost plugs.

The OEM bolt on block heater link is for the kit to attach the heater, a bolt and a couple of washers not the actual heater.

It's -7C now so will see how it fires up.

          thanks

Antifreeze is supposed to be good to at least -35C. If you are worried about starting, make sure the battery has a full charge and the motor oil is either 5W30 or 0W30.

The biggest concern is coolant freezing of course, so if in doubt get it checked. You don't want the coolant to freeze in the bottom hose.

After the engine starts, the next thing is the ATF being too cold. So take it easy for the first mile or so.

Leave the cabin temp controls at AUTO. The electronic control will not engage the blower until the engine starts to warm up. No need to blow cold air around.

            -7C is warm!

OK I'm new to these auto climate systems. 1991 is the one I'm used to.

I've always used 10w-30 Mobil 1. The pour point is -45C on both 5w-30 and 10W-30 which is odd but that's what Mobil lists.

              Thanks

Pour point is fine, but it becomes like syrup at -35C. I think the back of the owner's manual has a graph of oil to use in cold/hot regions of the world. These new engines, yours is one of them, can live nicely on 0W30.

The lower the viscosity, the easier it is to start and get oil flowing to critical internal parts. I use 10W30 in my 1996 850, but I park in a garage where -10C is about the coldest it gets. I also plug in a battery maintainer monthly, just to keep things nice.

Which reminds me, time to check the tire pressures.
