Daughter considering a S60

2006 S60. On the Volvo lot, probably won't last long.

60,000 miles, Silver, clean, automatic.

There are some dated posts in the archives that suggest the S60 is a relatively trouble free car, when there's consistent maintenance.

Two first questions I can think of for BB: What's the timing belt interval? Also, does this model have the often maligned AW-55 5 speed auto?

I'm making a list of questions to ask the dealer, so any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

For 2006 the Tbelt is between 105-120K or 10 years (2016). The 5 speed autobox is much better than the 2001-2002.

If it is a Volvo dealer, have them show you the maint history. They can print it off if it was serviced there. If it is not a local trade in, have the car sent through the inspection process, normally a $100 fee but should be free for them. Ask about a very cheap 12 months guarantee, 30-90 days is usually free. It should have a fresh oil change. It is old enough to have antifreeze flushed and brake fluid flushed.

Make sure it is using synthetic motor oil. That keeps the PCV system clean.

If you daughter doesn't like it...

Thanks, all great tips, for negotiating too.

Can't do much about prior oil changes if synthetic oil wasn't used, but not too late to start. Would be nice if I could get dealer to throw in TBelt change (approaching 10 years) and fluids flush, but the dealers are always stingy.

I just finished grooming daughter's 2000 V70 SE, passed down from family duty, into a sweet running machine. I will probably keep the V70!

Should be a nice car if you are already familiar with the V70.
I'm partial to wagons, buy my 1998 C70 is fun to drive.
Does the S60 have the 5 cylinder turbo engine?

As always, I learn a few things when with daughter.

          - oops, she really wants a S40. 'more sporty'
          - the S60 was actually a low mileage 2005, NA non-turbo. Very clean!
          - I didn't know this, starting in 2006 most S60 were turbos

Her first car at age 16 was a 1988 245, then the V70. Can't fault her logic for preferring Volvos.

So, we'll keep looking and I'll likely be posting soon on any S40 cautionary tales.

          Thanks!

She wants sporty? Find a P1800S or ES. Cheaper than a newer car, easier to work on, gets great mpg, and no one wants to steal it for parts. It will only appreciate in value.

I like those P1800 models too. No ABS, SRS, other safety features would be a consideration. Great cars however and agree values will go nowhere but up.

I also like ABS, but wearing seat belts properly and sitting back from the steering wheel makes the SRS mute. Does anyone really need 10 airbags? And when the passenger bag goes off, it will break the windshield.

Without ABS, a driver would have to learn how to drive again, keep good rubber on the wheels, and drive defensively. Probably why most p1800s come with a clutch.

I might be able to squeeze into an ES, but the S is just too small for me. Still cheaper than a 'new' car. Even if the leather seats need work and the rust makes it look like a brown paint job.

When I think "sporty", I don`t think S40. How about a C30? At least your daughter seems to be "brand loyal". My daughter was raised in a Volvo family, her Mom drives an XC70 and my wife & I drive Volvo`s too. Her first Volvo was an `84 242T........great car. She found it & Dad checked it out. Later she moved on to an 850. Sadly, she is now living in a city where she doesn`t need a car.
Hope that you & your daughter can find the "right" Volvo!
