AC smell? V70-XC70 1998

Hi,

I notice a ??mildew smell (similar to a smell from old clothes left alone for a long time) from the ventilation system and remembers in the past, someone mentioned that the AC can collect moisture and therefore mildew. Certainly this is not unique to Volvo.

Also when I turn on the AC the smell seems to go away.

Does anyone have any clues as to what causes this smell?

    The smell is mildew in your AC evaporator. the cheap fix is to spray Lysol in the air intake vents (at the base of the windshield) while your HVAC fan is on high. Do this once a week for the next month and the smell will disappear. This happens on almost all cars. Next time the caris in for service, have them make sure the AC evap drain tube is not clogged.
