AC smell S70 1998

Hi,

I notice a ??mildew smell (similar to a smell from old clothes left alone for a long time) from the ventilation system and remembers in the past, someone mentioned that the AC can collect moisture and therefore mildew. Certainly this is not unique to Volvo.

Also when I turn on the AC the smell seems to go away.

Does anyone have any clues as to what causes this smell?

cn

1998 V70

    Re: AC smell S70 1999

I had the same problem for the past year. After three complaints to my dealer they recently installed an "evaporator dryer", service bulletin number 8 87 836. (part $159 and $95 labor). The service tech said that it should have come with one from the factory with a dryer and they think they have fixed the problem. The warranty paid for it as far as I know. I have not noticed the smell since, but it has not been a rainy day since it was installed and that is when the smell was the worst. MH

PS if anyone knows what this dryer does, please post. THANKS, MH

Another way of putting it, your S70, now has the "afterblow" system that your 2001 S60 has, Would have mentioned it earlier but I wanted to ensure the afterblow was a standard feature on the S60. (it is)

The dryer is a wiring modification that will turn on the blower/fan (high speed) for 5-7 minutes, about 55 minutes after you turn off the ignition, if you have been running the A/C prior to stopping.

My '98 S70 does exactally that same thing. How many miles on your car? Mine has 60K. Just had the A/C serviced and they didn't find anything wrong with it...doesn't mean there wasn't. I would be curious to know if you've had any trouble with the A/C other than the smell?
