Re: MAF Screen Removal 850 1995

Just throwing in my 2 pennys. I don't like to "believe the hype" so I tried it myself with an extra MAS. Made no difference I could tell. So figured why not try it on an NA. Seemed to help a NA engine. No difference on the T5R that I do a lot of work on though. Due to lazyness I left the modified MAS in. That was way over a year ago and no problems or check engines as of yet. So bottom line, dont blieve the hype. It does hurt a lot of cars I have worked on. BMW comes to mind. But with out corragated intake pipe I could not tell a difference good or bad. If any one else has actually tried it let me know your results. No more he said she said though.

      Charles,

I tried this for the heck of it on my 1996 850 Turbo. My personal theory was that the turbo doesn't care too much about the "shape" of the air comming to it, just the quantity, too a certian usable point. (a NA engine would care about the air turbulance I'd think) I also figured that the sensor itself screwed up anything the screen did to smoothing out the air. I'd love to hear if I'm way wrong though. I was able to tell a little difference in the sound of the turbo, it's louder now. In addition, it seems that the turbo comes online a bit sooner.

The other mods I've made to the intake are a K&N stock replacement filter and removing the flap on the intake itself. These mods made very noticable differences. In addition, moving the horns and removing the brace from in front of the intercooler have made a difference in turbo performance.

      Hope this helps.

      Scott

I thought it was also a good idea. Good thing the mechanic at a mod shop told me otherwise, and to do my own research if I didn't believe him.

I spoke to people at Volvo, Garret, Bosch, and modification shop mechanics and they all told me the same thing. Yes, the MAF screen will cause some restriction, but removal will create WAY MORE TURBULENCE. And this turbulence tranlates into a slower stream of air. The screen actually straightens the air flow after being filtered.

After air is filtered, it gets very turbulent, and the MAF screen aids in performance.

The Mass Air Flow sensor is calibrated as an entire unit, wouldn't mess with it.
