Front End Clunking Sound 850 1997

I have a problem with my '97 850 R. I have an annoying clucking sound that is audible when going over bad roads. Any ideas what the problem is? I had a sound similar on my '94 940 which turned out to be a front strut mount. It sounds like metal against metal. By the way, if it is the strut mount, how do I check it to make sure? Thanks

Re: Front End Clunking Sound 850 1997

I just corrected a clunking sound on my 95. It was the sway bar links and they are easy to replace and are about $67 each.

Re: Front End Clunking Sound 850 1997

It sounds like a strut bearing to me. I replaced mine when the spring sounded like it was rattling around. As I replaced the bushing, the center section (metal sleeve) was completely ripped out of the moulded rubber.

I checked mine by pushing down on the car by the strut towers. Mine made a squeaking sound and the top of the bushing seemed to move more on one side than the other.

Re: Front End Clunking Sound 850 1997

I just replaced my front struts, strut mounts, and rotors on my 850.

The car would have a definite clunk going over speed bumps, etc. The fron t would also very easily bottom out when going in and out of driveways.

The upper strut mount exhibited cracking in the rubber around the metal sleeve. The strut bearing sits on top of the mount and is a separate piece. I probably should have replaced the bearings, but did not have them on a Friday night and from what I understand, thgey are pretty pricey.

In addition, the struts were origianl with 85k on them..they were totally shot..once out of the car, you could push them down and they would not come back.

I replaced the struts with Bilstiens, the ride height has increased about 1/2 inch..which I like and the ride is fantastic.

Mike
