Front rotors V70-XC70 2009

I took advantage of a combination of nice weather and free time to take the snows off the V70. A routine brake check while the wheels were off shows that I ought to do the front brakes. Pads and rotors. Napa shows two sizes of vented rotors for the front. How do I figure out which ones I need? As I recall, the sizes might be so close that I would have to take a rotor off to get an accurate measurement.
The picture is old. The blue car is long gone. Come to think of it, so is the Mini and most of my hair.

So, months later, I called a dealer with my VIN. Got Volvo part numbers, and size designation. Called NAPA, found out Volvo was cheaper. Called IPD. Got Volvo rotors and pads for less than the same rotors would have cost me at the dealer (then I would still have to buy pads). Free shipping. Great!

So this morning I went out to do the job. Got the machine screws out that retain the rotors, but could not budge the rotors. Never ran into that before. A firm application of a hammer will (used to) break them loose. No longer. Beat, pried, mumbled sprayed with PBlaster, had more coffee and beat some more. Perhaps I should have cursed, but for some reason I didn't.

Any ideas? Application of acetylene might help. Should I worry about cooking the bearings? Please help, the Life Partner has gone into wife.mil mode.

What size hammer are you using. Put that little hammer away.

This is a job for your BIG hammer (BFH),

and don't be bashful about smacking that old rotor.

Just watch out that it doesn't land on your toe.

Seems like the answer. Just before you posted I made an appointment to take it to the neighborhood shop. I see them when I need an inspection sticker, and not otherwise. They were delighted to install parts I brought in, and cheap enough. A ten pound hammer took the left rotor off in three pieces. The right didn't break, but was almost as stubborn. I had dosed the right side with Pblaster pretty well.
Anyway, that fixed the wobble and all is well for the moment.

        Thanks all.

Wow a 10 Lb sledge that's some serious Texas BFH!
My 32oz Ball Peen hammer always worked for me.
Maybe the rotors were in salt water?

          Happy motoring, Bill

Salt water? What do you think the roads are covered with here? Nasty salt stuff that EATS brake lines off most cars; if it's been bolted together for too many winters it just isn't coming apart.

VIN will tell you size. Contacted FCP and from the VIN I could then order. Used Brembo and Jurid pads. Sweet combo. Here in TX we rarely require the BFH, but you will need one in your area.

Good to see names from the RWD days.

Tascaparts.com shows 3 different types, depending on chasis # and XC/V. I would call them or your local dealer parts dept as measuring can be off a bit.

I also prefer OEM rotors and Tasca has good prices, delivery extra.

PS let us know as this will start becoming a good topic.

I've noticed some of the regular auto parts stores relate the rotor size to the rim size - 15" rims get the smaller rotor / 16" rims get the larger rotor. I don't know how reliable that relationship really is.

One time I thought I would be "smart" and measure the rotor with the wheel still on (lazy). OK, so I ended up taking the first pair back to the store and trading them for the correct size. From now on I will remove the wheel to measure the rotor. Or better yet, pull the rotor off so that I don't have to measure across the center hub part.
