V70 footrest/dead pedal possible removal tip V70-XC70

Have read several times recently this site that the driver's side foot rest / dead pedal removes by motion downward some and then lifting away from the footwell sole. Was wrestling with the pedal in that sense, trying to remove it yesterday preparatory to cooling system work (car is recent purchase, extant service record shows heater core was leaking several tens of thousand miles ago, dealer replaced heater core etc. then for the PO but the driver's footwell carpeting and foam underlayment never got cleaned up, cooling system somewhat related planned work is described at thread: *Head gasket R&R scheduled, parts on hand and specialty tools coming. What else should be done? V70-XC70 1998*) but the pedal was not budging yesterday by this route. This worked yesterday however: took about a 2 in. by 7 in. piece of scrap flat iron, piece is about 1/8 inch thick, held it horizontal with its forward edge resting on the upper edge of the foot rest pedal. Then tapped downward on the piece of iron plate with a hammer, held the hammer sideways because of low headroom forward in the footwell. Tap tap tap it went for all of about 10 seconds before the pedal slid down and allowed itself to be lifted away from its anchorment beneath the carpeting. Rare that I can add material knowledge to this site, hope this helps someone get a foot rest out.

I never said it was EASY! Down and off.

Now, wash that carpet and rinse it well. Try to not bend it much so it doesn't loose its shape and let air dry for a couple of days. You can still drive the car with the carpet out, but wear soft soled shoes.

The rubber liner is one piece. It only comes out if you remove all of the dash, ie. it was installed first.

Thank you Klaus. Your entries were the ones I read re-read and re-read again to get the direction right, down seems a bit counter-intuitive but down it was.

Washed the carpeting in the bathtub! Used several low-suds tepid water washings then rinsed couple times warmer but not hot water. Dried on clothesline in breeze and sunlight with four mechanic's clamps and hanging sideways. Does not look to have deformed.

Foam has to get cleaned too. What a soggy hunk of foam rubber that is. Want to see dry metal in the footwell.

Several dash lights are out in the instrument panel. May open that up and get better access to the foam at the same time. Thank you again.

Unless you replace the soaked foam the car will always smell of antifreeze. Especially after sitting in the sun. Just ask my wife!

I used 409 cleaner on the carpet, also in the bath tub. We had a hand held wand that acts as a shower head, perfect for rinsing. I also used a scrub brush. My carpet was full of oily grime and lots of dirt. Now it looks new.

As for the foam underlayment, not much you can do there. I get the newspaper delivered daily, so I just shoved and inch of flat newspaper under the foam and pressed down on the rubber side. Repeated until most of the antifreeze was soaked up, and then put another inch of paper under the carpet and let it sit for a couple of days. It will never completely dry, unless you visit Death Valley in the summer months and park it in the sun!!
