Ceramic Wheel Bearings ? 850

There's some companies making ceramic wheel bearings for race cars and other
applications, and they have a number of interesting claims.
http://www.performancebearing.com/dragracing.html
I'm wondering if hi-tech wheel bearings in the old 850 would result in better
mileage. Since all of my wheels turn hard when off the ground and it's not
the brakes grabbing.
I understand that the bearings can be removed from the hub, but perhaps some
being more stubborn that others. So now I need to find an old hub to see just
how nasty a job it is to get the old bearing out and get the dimensions to see if
anyone has the right ceramic bearing.
One tech at IPD says that he has put motorcycle hubs in a 250 degree oven for 10-12 minutes and have them fall out, and he has had the Volvo hubs fall out
before.

Who has an old hub that they might want to get the bearing out and see what
kind of hassle it is? Once it's out we need measurements for the bearing.

Thanks, Bill

I believe hubs are sealed.....you can't get inside them......

The Bearings are pressed into the Hubs

IPD said they had some bearings fall out when they were doing stuff.

They might come apart OK. You don't happen to have a junk hub?

I agree the hubs seem to turn harder than you would expect. In all 20 years I have owned the car I have only had to replace the right front one. Not a pleasant job. I trashed it, sry. Am curious to see if can do it. Keep us posted.

You need to find a North Boston pick&pull, just bring your pipe wrench and cheater bar to take off the axle nut.

      Hi Klaus

Pipe wrench? Naw It will give me a chance to test out that Harbor Freight
3/4" Drive set (for the price of a snap-on socket maybe), I'll still use the
Swedish persuader (a hunk of steel fence post) on the wrench handle. :-)

Hmmm, It might be a problem getting the big nut off with the wheels off?

Are the front and rear hubs identical?

      Bill

Most of the 850s are automatics. You don't care about the tranny, so put it in park! If the hub starts turning, try a different car.

Some of the 850s, you will want 1994-1998 FWD, might have a bent metal locking tab, so watch for that. Don't forget about the E16? screws in the back of the hub. I remember using a small 6 point socket...

Front and rear are different. So, get one of each.

What you need is one of those 20V hammer drills...
