ECC 850 1993

A friend of mine has an '93 850, which the local dealer has diagnosed as having a failed Dual Zone ECC unit.

Symptoms are that the fan runs very briefly on startup and then will not run at all - at speed, however, cold air comes through the vents, suggesting that the system is cooling, the fan is just not running.

First question is: is there anything else that could cause this besides the ECC unit? As I understand it, the unit we are talking about is the unit with the temp knobs that slides into the dash.

Secondly, if it is the ECC unit, any suggestions for finding one at a reasonable cost?

Thanks.

I have also seen ECC units fail, but it is the exception, not the rule. The most common cause for the symptoms you describe are bad blower motor, (more common) and bad power stage. (AKA resistor) The power stage screws in to the blower housing below and to the left of the blower motor. It is about 2" square and attaches with 1 screw. Suggest you check in to these two components before shelling out for the ECC unit

    Re: ECC 850 1993

I would ask the dealer to plug in a known good unit to show you that it is the fault. I would also be prepared to purchase that part and pay for diagnostic time if that fixes it. The volvo scan tool will lead the technician there if that is where the problem is. I have had to replace those units before, but I would not say that they have inherent problems.
