Axle shaft stuck in transmission V70-XC70 2006

Hello

I have a V70 2006 AWD 2.5T and I need to replace both front axle shaft. I started to work on this on the last Saturday and started with the left side (shorter axle). Removed everything to get to the axle but when unable to pop it out. Tried prying it out at different position but without succes. Didn't want to pry to hard to avoid damaging the transmission case.

Had to put everything back in place, I'm out idea... Anyone ?

Thank in advance

Bruno

Did this method work?

I've been struggling with the left inner CV joint on the '01 S40.
I even have the transmission out of the car where I can get a better access, but this SOB still does not want to pop out.

I've pried and pried with screwdrivers and pry-bars;
Tried robert d-i-y's method with the carpenter's pry-bar;
Soaked with PB Blaster;
Driven two chisels in the gap (on opposite sides of the CV joint).
End result? Nothing.

Have about 3 hours into this thing and I can't believe it won't budge.
I may end up buying a new axle, but sheesh, it's got to come out, right?

Know any other methods?

Do you have to take axles out when replacing CV boot? How about to re-grease the bearings in the CV? Cheers

Unfortunately, yes, the axles do need to be removed to replace a torn boot. The outer boot slides on/off on the transmission end of the axle, requiring the inner boot to also be removed. A real pain and a very dirty procedure, which is why it is so much easier to just replace the axle.

Too bad, as the CV joints are quite robust and a new boot along with new grease would satisfy most driver's needs.

Hello

I need to change both axle because they are both vibrating and also both sides boots are cracked and grease is spreading out a lot.

Thanks for suggesting anyway !

Milanomike is correct, the driver's side axle has a circlip on the end to hold it in place, unlike the passenger side which just falls out. Use a pry bar or very large screwdriver and pop the axle out. It also takes a little finess and some brute force to get it back in position.

Hello

Thank you for your reply. I did what you suggest on the last Saturday but I guess I did not apply enough pressure to pop it out... Is there any way I can protect the tranny casing while prying with the pry bar ? I want to make sure it won't crack...

Just did the driver side on our 850 a few months back, it would not pop out. take a home depot pry bar, the thin one with a right angle bend. the handle so to speak is about 18" long and the right angle bend is a couple of inches. Put the short side between the inner joint and case, give it a whack with a hammer, comes right out. I wish I could take credit for this, but saw it on a YouTube video by that guy Robert who works on Volvo's. You won't hurt anything. This assumes the 850 and XC are similar.
