A most enjoyable upgrade for 98 and older for under $20 S70 1998

I just performed a very cool upgrade for the total cost of $17.78 including tax. The upgrade is or are the windshield spray nozzles. I changed from the low profile ones that came with my car to the new-style ones (2000 and on?). Although I like the looks of the old-style ones better, the functionality of the new-style ones is far superior. The old ones sprayed two skinny sprays (each) onto the windshield and were almost unuajustable. I found myself timing the spray to hit the windshield at just the right time to get optimum pread over the entire area. The new ones produce a fan-shaped mist rather than two discreet streams. This mis covers the entire area no matter where the wiper is and I have to use MUCH less fluid to get the window clean. Also gone is the dry spot at the bottom left. So, aside from the appearance it is a great change all around. The new ones are unajustable as well, but doesn't seem like it is necessary.

The new nozzles fit right into the place of the old ones. Strangely, the parts guy said they still carry both styles. Wonder why? Any Ideas?

Oh, here are the part numbers, $8/ea at my dealer:

old style: 9127605

new style: 6816437

To remove the old nozzles, open the hood and disconnect the rubber fluid lines from the nozzles by pulling straight down on them. Then with a pair of needle-nosed pliers gently squeeze the sides of the nozzle stem from beneath the hood. This squeezes the two latches that keep the nozzles from coming out. Now gently push up on the nozzle while still squeezing (gently) its sides. You'll feel it let go. To put the new one in, just push it in from above the hood. It just snaps in place. Reconnect the fluid line and you are on your way.

      Good Luck

    Vladimir,

How do you remove the old nozzles from the vehicle ? How do you

    re-install the new nozzles ?

I'm planning to pick them up tomorrow afternoon on the way home from school.

    TIA,

Re: A most enjoyable upgrade for 98 and older for under $20 S70 1998

Kenny, I see that you have Kevlar front brake pads. I have the EBC Greeenstuff, which is Kevlar I believe. My OEM rotors warped shortly after installation of the new pads. I had them turned last week. (John , the Volvo repair person said a while back that you aren't supposed to turn Volvo Rotors, but I needed to stall for time and money. Although, a couple hundred dollars isn't cheap. I expect that they may warp again if it is because the pads get hotter than Volvo pads. My car did sit in an uneven position for a month while I was out of town; I noticed the warping after I returned. The calipers are rebuilts, I wasn't sure if there could have been a sticking problem with them. Anyway, do you think the cross drilled rotors would be less likely to warp than the original ones with the Kevlar? Have you ever had the warped rotor problem? Or is that more a problem with older 850's?

      Kenny,

Could you tell me that where did you get the auto rearview mirror for your S70 ? Is there is kit from Volvo to modify the existing rearview mirror to a auto one ?

If there is a kit for that, could it be installed in a 850 ?

      Thanks,

      Ching-Ho Cheng

I agree that a fan pattern is best for covering more area to reduce dry wiping. But, if you were travelling at a decent speed, and especially at highway speeds, this fan will be significantly less effective.

Ever since I changed a check valve, the spray has been incredibly strong. On some cars, the thin stream gets blown around at much slower speeds, and now, the stream is nice and strong delivering lots of spray when I need it. And even with the flow as good as it is, at highway speeds, you can see a little dip in the spray. And as the speed increases linearly, the lowering of the spray increases exponentially.

Works better for me in all situations so far. I will try tomorrow at highway speed. The old style nozzles weren't so great at any speed in comparison to the new ones. And I can vouch for my check valve being ok. I did not get a weak spray I just got a poorly aimed and poorly concentrated spray. Also, I think to deal with the high speed issue you bring up, the fan spray is aimed ever so slightly higher than necessary (at stop/low speed). At first I was irritated, but now that you mentioned high speed situation, I think I understand. Will let you know tomorrow when I get to work. I usually get to get up to tripple digits for at least a little while on the way to work :))

      Cheers.

More than anything, I suspect that more than desired amounts of windshield washer liquid will simply mist into the fast moving air and totally miss the wind screen, or even evaporate at a higher rate.

With this mister style, I don't think the air will so much push the stream down as it will mist it even more.

Re: A most enjoyable upgrade for 98 and older for under $20 S70 1998

Well, at 80mph the spray worked fine if a little different. The wind actually depressed the fan and caused it to hit the windshield lower than at 0mph. No fluid went anywhere but the windshiled. The results were good, since the fluid hitting the windshield lower immediately got pushed up by the force of the wind and the wipers got the full distribution. I would say at high speed the new-style nozzles are still better than the old ones, but not by as much as in low speed situations. Still a win IMO, still I needed to keep the spray on for a lot shorter time. I tend to use the spray at lower speeds anyway, for when I am going fast, usually no one is in front of me so close as to necesetate the spray. Anyway, for $20 give it a try and if you don't like it, donate them to someone who does.

          Cheers.

Sounds like an improved product then.

Maybe when my nozzles go, I'll make the switch.

    Vladimir,

I was thinking about doing it just the other way around. I like the looks of the older(low profile)ones much better. Now after your post I guess I will shelf that idea.....I didnt know the spray was not the same......and I kinda like the way the ones I have work.....so.

As far as why they still carry both parts.....I guess because some people want what came as stock on their car....or they just dont know of the new ones????

Steve, keep the ones you have - they are superior, except I have to concur with you about the looks. Hey, I'll be in NJ (most likely) for the long weekend, maybe we can hookup and I will let you try my old ones (heck if you like them you can keep them) - there is nothing wrong with them. I do like the new ones a lot better. I got the idea from driving the loaners. One thing that I always liked was the way the spray worked.

      Let me know.

Hmm..I wonder if they work on 7xx and saabs. S70 1998

I liked 4 streams on my 7xx so much I went and got a driver's side nozzle for my saab and put it on the pax side. I've been looking for a Ford-type fluidic nozzle for a long time...now that Ford owns Volvo I guess that's where volvo is getting the parts. About time.

Maybe they'll get to the point where the nozzle is on the wiper blade!
