check engine light V70-XC70 2001

I have owned a Volvo V70-T5 for the last 13 years. After 136,000(+) miles, I have come to the conclusion that having the local Volvo dealer do all the service is not always the best option. Recently I replaced the two exhaust mufflers and connecting pipe at a cost savings of $900(+) below the dealer's cost estimate. Therefore, when the "pesky" Check Engine light comes on, I am wondering what type of problem(s) may be causing this. I noticed that some fluid was in the exit pipe of the catalytic converter when I replaced the mufflers. The light Check Engine light has come on and gone off by itself before. I had though that replacing the exhaust system might solve the problem. The Owner's Manual states that this is likely a "emission problem" and "see your dealer" is recommended. the car runs fine and uses no oil.
My Question: What are the possible problems that may cause this.

Skip, most autoparts stores will read the codes for free. My local store lets me use one in their parking lot so I can delete the code if need be. Autozone will not delete the code, corporate policy, but they will bring the code reader to the car and tell you what the codes are.

There may be more than one code, so write them down and report back.

The check engine light coming on will reveal it's info with a code reader.

Thanks Bill! I will see if one of my friends has one of these and if not, how much one would cost.

I'm not the one to ask. My 95 850 has onboard OBD and 1996 marked the end of that, requiring a reader. There's a wide variety available and the price, features and functions vary. Others will have some ideas I'm sure.

I'll be watching the responses with interest. You could open a new thread about
        code readers.
