Can't find ATF Dipstick. Is there one? If not, what is procedure for checking?

I have an '01 which has a different transmission, but I think they're similar.

It is not easy to see or access. I have only see yellow dipsticks, but it may be covered in grease and oil.
It is located on the front side of the transmission under the large hose that connects to the throttle body.
There is a metal locking tab on the side of the dipstick tube that gets pushed to the side so you can remove the dipstick.

I had a 2001 v40, so I know the dipstick you are describing. The 2000 s40 is different. There is not a dipstick there.

Bill is correct in his location description. My 2003 S40 tranny dip stick is located where he describes. My dipstick looks like a round yellow plunger. This is on the base 1.9L 4cyl turbo engine. I would think yours would be similarily located.

I would say look again. Maybe you are seeing it, but not seeing it. : )

Get the owners manual for your car online.

It has that stuff in it.

Unfortunately, the manual does not illustrate the location of the ATF dipstick. In addition, the manual does not discuss how to check the ATF level.

        Pg 109 engine compartment
item 7 oil dipstick for tranny
Volvo goofed and didn't point to it's location

The tranny is to the drivers side of the engine block
look directly left of the battery, down low, buried amidst a large
hose It's a yellow plastic end. (It's hard to see)

It should be left of the battery and in line with the brake master cylinder

Once you find it, there's two marks, hot and cold.
Check it after it's warmed up is best, keep the engine running while you check
it. You are interested in the level being correct and also in the condition
of the tranny fluid. It need's periodic flushing. There's writeups and videos
explaining how you can do it. Avoid the power flushes at garages.
Healthy ATF should be red and not brown.

        Bill

Thanks. I will do another hunt for the dipstick using your guidance.

I looked again last night, but no luck. The location you describe has a mechanism(lever arm) attached to the transmission. Have you actually seen this dipstick on a 2000 S40?

No I haven't seen the dipstick in that model year.
But it needs to access the tranny oil pan. So if you can't find it
it is probably hidden by the hose or other stuff nearby.
The dipstick is generally down very low so, you're in there almost to your elbow.
You can look under the car to see where the tranny oil pan is,
and above that is where your dipstick should be.

Maybe the top of the dipsick is is broken off, or the dipstick is missing?

Don't give up, look also for the dipstick tube, which might be harder
to see, but also harder to lose.

              Bill
