2007 V70 (210K miles) with cracked breather tube V70-XC70 2007

Happy 4th of July to all my fellow brick-boarders! I spent my 4th of July identifying a whining noise inside the engine of my wife's '07 V70. Turns out the breather tube was cracked where it comes out from under the spark-plug cover, and upon further inspection/handling, completely crumbled away in my hands all the way down below the intake manifold. The engine is currently drawing a high vacuum, and I was wondering if I can drive it in this condition until I get that fixed? It seems to drive OK, except at idle where RPM oscillates between 800 and 1100 when engine is hot. Also wondering if I can replace the breather tube without tearing the fuel rail and intake manifold off? What was Volvo thinking when they designed this breather tube (at least they could have used some decent materials that would last a little longer)?

Any help would be appreciated.

Bernie

I suppose it is possible to replace the hose, but it is all blind work, including the clamp on top of the oil separator box. You might need an extra joint in your forearm?

I thought Volvo had 'fixed' this issue since the 850 days, darn. Matthews volvo site has a 'fix' for the hose that goes from the oil separator box to the throttle body area.

Your gas mileage will suffer, the front O2 sensor will be over worked due to the 'long term fuel trim' problem, and eventually your spark plugs will get coated so bad that the engine will stall - eventually...

      Thanks Klaus. Update since Monday:

      - After removing the cracked breather tube AND cleaning out a slightly gummed-up throttle control module, I no longer observe the vacuum issue/whining noise.

Could the issue have been related to the throttle control module, not the breather tube?

      Thanks,

      Bernie

Fixing 2 things that were needed makes it hard to figure out. 210K would make for a very dirty throttle body, so that will make for a better running engine. Repairing a vacuum line does the same thing.

        Happy trails!

Klaus - what is the purpose of that 'breather tube' anyways? 'Just dropped the car off at the dealer this morning, hoping to get his expert opinion by EOD.

          Regards,

          Bernie

At 210K, don't be surprised if the dealer hits you with a recommendation to service the PCV system - with a HEALTHY sized dollar estimate.

Breather tube takes the oil vapors from the cam shaft area and sends them back down to the separator box to either condense back into usable oil that drains to the sump, or routes it to the intake to be burned.
