Water Pump on XC70

My wife took the `04 XC70 into the dealer this morning to have the T belt, etc changed. She just called to say that the tech had found the timing belt in excellent condition but the water pump is leaking a little. And as always happens in these situations, they don't seem have a water pump in stock.
The previous owner had the tbelt/water pump changed at an "indie shop" so after market parts were used so I`m guessing that`s likely why the pump is leaking at this point.
Breaking news!! Just had another call & they do have a pump in stock so I gave my wife the "go-ahead".
Maybe I should have had them replace the Tbelt with a Volvo belt??
Thanks,
Rich

A new T-belt won't add any labor charge to the job - just the cost of the belt. You know how many miles are on yours / how many miles are remaining / the cost of a new belt belt / the labor cost when it DOES need to be replaced (if you don't do it now). Do the math.

      Water Pump on XC70 Update

Belt/pump had been changed at 120K & car currently has 182K on odometer. Previous owner who is a friend had disclosed that it needed new rod ends + Tbelt/pump when we bought it & had deducted cost of repairs from selling price. Replacing Tbelt, etc would have added another $400 to the bill which was already high @ $750 + taxes.
I agree that the belt should likely have been changed but it was an "executive decision" made by my wife with a view to $.
      Thanks for replies!

I wonder how many miles before that water pump started leaking?
You might ask if the leak was at the pump shaft bearing or was it leaking around the gasket? Did the pump start leaking or did it leak at the gasket?

Maybe there there wasn't a complete removal of all the old waterpump gasket? I found that you need RTV and the gasket at the waterpump, especially if the mating surface gets messed up, which is easy to do.

Tbelts are relatively cheap, as are tensioners and rollers. If you change the Tbelt, you really need to change the tensioner.

The dealer will charge you a lot for the H2O pump swap, but well worth it as the screws are a pain in the back. Correct about the after market pumps, they just don't last!

You didn't say when the Tbelt was changed last or how many miles on it. The aftermarket belts are usually pretty good.
