S90 "Died in the shop'????? S70

Help me to understand: Car started without problem. Drove to repair shop.
Return to pick up the car. The car is dead. Wont even turn.
Check engine light was on, and was not passing smog, but car was running fairly well when dropped off. Any guesses. Just amuse me if nothing else.
Shop said car died in shop?

1999 s70. 230,000 miles.

If the starter will not engage, 9 out of ten times it is a dead battery. What begs the question, why was it in the shop? Did the shop check the codes for the CEL? Did they not call you when it wouldn't start so they could drive it in to the service bay? Or was it completely 'repaired' and someone left the door open for 6 hours?
