trans fault code 124 from A1 850 1993

I think my tranny finally gave out (POS). Would someone be kind enough to tell me what code 124 from PORT A1 pertains to? My car goes forward even when I try to engage reverse. Even though the other gears are engaging, it feels like someone is stepping on the brakes when I accelerate. The upshift light never came on to indicate a problem, and there is no check engine light. This all happened right in my driveway about a half hour after the car had been driven a few miles with no problem and no prior symptoms. Went back out to drive the car a half hour later, and when I tried to engage reverse, the car only goes forward with driveability problems. Thanks in advance.

Re: trans fault code 124 from A1 850 1993

bou bou,

I think you are in luck and your tranny has not given out. DTC 1-2-4 is "Short-circuit to ground in mode selector circuit". Basically, the Winter/Economy/Sport selector on you center console is a fault. There are three possibilities, 1) There is a short circuit in the signal wiring. 2)The W button has been depressed for more than 30 seconds (which causes a fault) or 3) defective mode selector. Believe it or not, when this fault is stored the transmission will only operate in driving mode E regardless of the position selected on the gear selector! Have the driving mode selector checked out for proper resistance, signal or short circuit.
