I have a 1996 850 GLT wagon, non-turbo with a 5 speed. It has 291,000 miles on it. I may have to replace the piston rings soon due to reduced PSI in 3 of the cylinders. Volvo used to sell a “kit” that contained a piston ring(s) together with necessary hardware. You purchased one “kit” per piston. The part # for this ring “kit” is Part # 272159. Unfortunately that “kit” is no longer available.

Does anyone know where I could find these Volvo piston ring kits? In the alternative, can anyone recommend an aftermarket supplier of piston rings? Thank you in advance to all who reply.

Did the compression test verify leaking rings by adding oil to each piston and retesting? Did you have a leak down test, which checks the valve clearances?

Either job is a real job for an experianced mechanic, not your typical shade tree type like most of us.

I haven’t had these tests done, but I will be for spending any money. The psi ratings on the 5 cylinders was: 190, 185, 189, 175, and 160. My mechanic tells me the first 3 cylinders are considered to be “Good”. That last two “Fair”.

check myswedishparts.com i have seen the kit there before. You might also google the part numbers to see if some dealers might still have a spare kit. Lastly, you might contact an engine rebuilder in you your area to see who they buy parts from. When my engine went 8 years ago, my mechanic said these blocks were not good candidates for rebuild and to find a new junk yard one.......
