Odometer Problems - I'm not crazy!! 850 95

I know that there's got to be somebody out there who can help me. I recently purchased a 95 850 turbo with about 59K on it. I purchased the car, had the oil changed, a new battery put in and some new tires put on it and I drove it 450 miles from San Fran to San Diego. When I reached SD, the trip odometer and regular odometer said that I had gone over 750 miles! I had reset the digital computer odometer before I left and it was dead on 450 miles. I've done this drive many times before and I know that the correct mileage is around 450.

I'm wondering if something has got the car in kilometers rather than miles. What can I do to get the odometer clicking back in miles? It can't be the tire sensor or else the computer odometer would be wrong. The mechanic at the local dealer thinks I'm nuts. Please help!!!

Rob

    Rob-

You are correct in assuming your odometer is registering km instead of miles. The trip computer registers miles because the US market computer is a miles-only calibration. Your instrument cluster can be switched back to miles with the VST (Volvo Scan Tool) by your friendly dealer. Just be patient and explain to them that somehow your cluster got set on metric. It will take them about 10 minutes to effect the change once they figure out what they need to do. The charge for this sorcery should be about half an hour.

Thanks for your suggestions regarding my odometer. I've called 4 different garages in the area (including 2 dealerships) and apparently there aren't any wizards in my area that can reset the cluster from km to miles. Their only suggestion is to buy a whole new cluster ($800 with parts and labor). Do you have any suggestions for me?

      Thanks again,Rob

        Rob-

The instrument cluster can be switched from km to miles in mode 6 diagnostics. Have your dealer connect the VST and access the Combined Instrument. Have them go into Mode 6. There is a option for 'speedo type' that should come up with a choice between metric and miles, or European and US, or something to that effect. As I said before, this is a 5-10 minute job. If they don't believe you, have them check the info in the VADIS cart as to programming the instrument cluster. BTW, if they sell you a new cluster, they have to program speedo type into the new part to get the odo to read correctly.

          Dave,

I really appreciate all of your help. You're what makes the brickboard a great place for info. I'll let you know what happens with the yahoos at my dealership.

If it's that far off, and your dealer thinks your crazy, have him follow you for a 10 mile jaunt around town. When you both get back, compare mileage.

      Rob,

you may want to search the archives, I can remember a post explaining how to do this trick from the diagnostic port A7. Sorry I didn't save it, maybe next time.
