Alternator Question V70-XC70

Does anyone know a good way to test out the alternator out of the car?

Bought this 2002 xc70, got everything else going on it before getting a system voltage warning. Voltage at the battery was low even while running - easy fix - alternator.

However, in this instance I tried to give rebuilding the alternator a go. Purchased a voltage regulator online, removed a whole bunch of stuff - and finally got it out. The only problem is that after installing the voltage regulator it still bench tests as failed at the parts store (12v).

Am I missing something? Is it possible the test is flawed? Did I get a junk regulator? Not sure if I should install it and test in the car, or bite the bullet for a new one.

    Alternator Question V70-XC70

Did You check the diodes for being open or shorted ?
then I'd make sure the D+ connection hasn't been broken

      Alternator Question V70-XC70

Sorry guys - didn't mean to ignore your messages. I think you are both onto something with the diodes - and my approach that "it is always the voltage regulator" bit me in this instance. Had it tested at two different shops because I was wary of the result. The second guy felt so bad for me he knocked 10% off, and now i have a spare voltage regulator on the shelf and a rebuilt alternator into the car.

Auto electronics are not my strong suit - so I appreciate the fellow brickboarders showing me the way!

    Alternator Question V70-XC70

    I found this interesting:

I don't know if it is part of your problem or not.

When you pulled off the old regulator, what shape were the brushes in? Usually, they are quite short (worn down) and one of them has moved enough to no longer have good contact.

Were you watching the person bench testing the alternator? Why not?
