seat belt latch broken (?) 850

So after fixing my window riser mechanism, breaking my ash tray in the process (and getting a new one at a pick-n-pull), I get in my car to head out to my high school reunion (Yay fighting Trojans).

I go to put the seat belt into the latch, and nothing is happening. Sometimes that happens, but usually because I have a shirt on that is too long and it is trying to put the seat belt through the shirt. But this time, that is not why.

For whatever reason, it's just not latching.

No matter what I do, it's just not catching. Has anyone had a similar problem (I'm betting yes), and if so, anyone have any experience fixing?

Is it possible to swap the passenger seat latch for the drivers seat?

If I have passengers, they can just sit in the back.

This was not the OP's problem evidently but, as a reminder, one of the most common problems with seatbelt latches (on any make) is that many kids have put coins in the slot. A simple and effective if unintended sabotage of the mechanism.

With that in mind, I just recently noticed my drivers seatbelt receiver housing had partially popped open. Further attention revealed that the plastic is designed to be removeable (no tools). One of the halves slides upward before being able to be separated. I was also afraid that removing the shell would allow some spring mechanism to fling tiny pieces to parts unknown. Not so. Cleans out easily. and pops back into position with ease once you can see how it goes together.

I removed the seat bolts, pushed the seat back and removed the receiver for the seat belt.

I noticed it looked different than the passenger side, so I wonder if it was broken or something.

After some putzing around with it, I figured out the locking mechanism. Pushing down on a lever, the lock is supposed to slide into place and keep the seat belt locked. I noticed that it didn't seem to catch. So I sprayed some silicone spray on it, and it helped a bit. And now I've sprayed some PB Blast in it, and I've let it soak for a bit.

Hopefully it's like my window riser mechanism, and was just in need of being cleaned/lubed.

Your car needs some serious cleaning! No, you cannot move the passenger belt receiver to the driver's side. Besides, not everyone wants to be in the rear seat.

The pick&pull is best for a used belt receiver. You could stick it in boiling water for a few seconds to get all of the crud out. Oil, silicone, etc will just attract more dust/dirt after working for a bit and getting your shirt dirty.

As for the window switch removal, all you needed to do was to remove the plastic under the E brake handle and reach forward with your fingers and push the switch up and out. Much easier. If you have small fingers, push out the left rear switch and then you have access to the other switches from that hole.

My fingers wouldn't fit in that area.

I ended up going to PnP and getting a new (to me) seat belt.

Works fine now.

I also bought some roof molding (only 1 though).
