Blower fan / motor / ? 850

When I start my 1996 Volvo 850 GL (240K) even on cold mornings, the fan works and blows warm soon after. However after normal driving (about 40 miles), on restarts the motor does not blow strong (if at all), although I do detect the slightest bit of heat coming through the vents when the vehicle is moving. Also have been able to get the fan to blow properly with a medium to angry whack under the glove compartment on occasion. Winter's coming, heat is good in the wintertime. This summer I did pick up a donor blower motor/fancage from a (believe it or not) 1997 850 wagon with only 112K. So before I start disassembling things, any suggestions from the above symptoms as likely culprits other than the motor itself may simply be wearing out?

Thanks in advance.

I missed your post last August about the blower squeaking. Yes, replace the blower before it totally dies. The only hard part about this job is removing the knee bolster (actually putting the bugger back in!).

When is the last time you vacuumed out the cabin temp sensors behind the front grab handles?

Front grab handles? Where/what in the world are those?

ya know, we sometimes call them the "OH $h!t" handles, to hold onto when daddy is driving home from church to see the football game. just above the windows. the temp sensors are hiding in the handle ends

          Hello
I have exactly the same issue with my '96 850T.
I had to replace the fan in my '93 a few years back but in that case there were obvious
fan noises and intermittent working of different features of the AC and heat.
But in this case... everything works fine when it is working... i.e. all fan stages, direction of heat to floor windshield and car itself... fan works from low to high, thermostat works ... everything is normal.
No nasty noises or anything... except the blinking lights of death (recycle and AC)

And then the next time I get in the car there is nothing... no fan or heat until the car warms up and is moving forward then fan-less heat is distributed wherever the dials are set at.
If stuck in traffic I freeze... going along a highway is ok if not TOO cold outside.

The only question I have is that if it is the blower... then why intermittent? How does it work just fine and then nothing? Is it possible that this is an electrical issue or some thermostat, relay or switch not functioning?

Before I take out the blower this weekend (in the cold) I would just like to eliminate any other possibilities.

Your experience is welcomed. Thanks guys.

Look above the front windows. See the very small grill hidden behind the handle, those pull out and you can then vacuum out the hole with a crevas nozzle. Amazing where dust bunnies hide.
