Axle stuck in the transmission S40-V40

My 2003 V40 has over 220K miles and needed new axles. One of the axles was easy to replace. The other side is stuck in the transmission and can not be pried out. Therefore, only half of the axle has been replaced with a low mileage used unit. I have another low mileage used unit should it need to be replaced again. I am afraid of when the entire axle needs replacement. Anyone run into this problem and what solution did they use to resolve?

I also had a left side half-shaft stuck in the transmission.

It was so bad that I could not remove it with the transmission installed in the car. There just was not enough room to get leverage on the inner "driver". I finally went at it with the transmission out of the car and came to the realization that I may end up cracking the transmission case just trying to remove the half-shaft. I was successful with no apparent damage to the case. HOWEVER, I have not reinstalled that particular transmission so I cannot say with 100% certainty that something was not damaged internally.

I removed it by pounding two chisels between the transmission case and the "driver" on opposite sides of each other. It eventually broke free and slowly came out.

Wish I could give you a more positive response, but that's what happened with my '01 S40 with 185,000 miles.

Fortunately, I have a spare vehicle so when the time comes, I will buy a low mileage used transmission off Ebay. They are only one to a couple hundred dollars plus shipping. There is one right now with only 7K miles for 1,000, but I don't have the money to buy a spare transmission. Wish I did and I would be prepared for when the time comes. I suspect the transmission will be the weak link in the car.

FWIW, the used transmission that I installed, I purchased from a local scrapyard.
$200 for a '01 transmission with 125,000 on it and guaranteed for 6 months. I've added about 8,000 miles so far without issues.

I don't think these transmissions are a weak link. But do make sure you use the proper fluid.
