mouse invasion! V70-XC70 2006

Okay,

The car is garaged but we have had an industrious mouse or meesses set up home in the hood liner, our Boxer dog alerted us to it due to the chewing noises... good boy! So far it appears the mess is to the hood liner and eaten acorns scattered throughout the engine compartment. I would like to check the cabin air filter to see if those bulgy eyed buggers have made it to the interior. The question is how to get to the filter? Could not locate this in the 06 user manual.

Thank you,

jorrell

I would never set a trap inside a car, don't want mice chewing their way in just for the scent of bait. Peanut butter is perfect for attracting mice. Peppermint oil keeps them away.

Klaus,

I cleaned up under the hood and changed the cabin filter, no internal ingress into the interior. Pressure washed everything under the hood and fixed the hood liner. The car is now back in it's normal garage with 8 snap traps laying beneath the car. Something about getting ticked off when an acorn is jamming the shift linkage on top of the trans!

Get some peppermint oil and cotton balls. Put a few drops of the oil on the cotton balls and place them where the mice are. They will leave. I use it in all our parked cars and tractors over the winter. The peppermint oil messes with their lungs. And traps. I like the Victor traps with a metal bait pedal. With a little practice you can adjust the force needed to trip the trap and nobody gets away.

We've been using Peppermint Altoids as they are made with real peppermint oil - A few stapled inside of a coffee filter and thrown under each front seat. We replace them every few months.

As for the garage area, we use a product called Fresh Cab that we get at Ace Hardware. They're like big tea bags full of some sort of "natural" mouse repellant that smells like really strong pine trees.

No mice problems for several years using these two methods.

Volvo speed Bay 13 has a couple of cabin filter instructions.

The best way to check your interior for mice is to set some traps around your car and under the hood for a week or so, then set a couple inside the car after you have cleared the outside.

A company named Kness makes terrific mouse traps.

Their snap-E trap has several advantages - it has a strong spring - because it only travels 90 degrees, it is twice as fast as a common trap - the plate around the bait cup is all around the bait, and it catches mice from any direction.

I really like their traps, and I catch mice in my home, garage, storage trailer, and shed. I even have a trap attached to the front bulkhead in my XC 70s - I have trapped two mice under their hoods - and I have two cats!

I have trapped 30 mice or so - my daughter in Minnesota has trapped over a hundred in her small barn (she has goats) and two weasels!

In order to keep my cats from messing with my traps, I cut a 1 inch hole in plastic coffee containers and set the traps inside the containers. Your wife won't have to look at dead mice either.
