transmission clunk S60 2003

Ok
Whilst thinking about my thunking down shift,in the meantime i changed the oil with mobil 3309 as recommended
Not flushed , just changed
Now the transmission has gone from a thunk to a clunk and intermittently on upshifts as well
NO flaring tho
I had seen posts where people did an oil change and it killed the transmission
I cant believe new oil is worse than old oil?
Should i put some old oil back (just kidding )
What happens in there? What dies? What have i done?
I did notice that the upper engine stay mount ( crappy square one ) is shot, so will replace that and consider a stealer trans software update and adaptive procedure.
Any way to do this without the stealership?
Back to the question, would a later trans be ok?Would it fit?
What did they change internally to fix these issues
Valve body?
solenoids?
Other?
Looking forward to some enlightenment and thanks Klaus and Rick for your advise
I have a 50yr old 122 and a 50 yr old 1800s still going strong
I have 2 2003 s60's and a 2009 V70
I wonder if the last three will reach any notable milestones
And in my cupboard, a white jacket with very long sleeves LOL
Regards David

I doubt you did anything wrong. Changing is better than flushing. One thought is that these transmissions are very sensitive to fluid levels, but those levels are hard to check, given the crummy design of the dipstick. If the levels aren't right, there can be shifting problems.

My car has essentially the same transmission. I had good luck with a partial drain/fill with Mobil JWS3309, followed by a dealership software update and a reset of the adaptives. That was years ago now, and it has been reliable since.

I would also read up on the B4 servo cover update, which is cheap, and should be done prior to resetting the adaptives (Volvo book time is 0.6 hrs, the part is about $30).

Good luck!

I should say that i used the ipd method
does this constitute a flush or a change?
Thanks David

I have to agree with Herb, sometime dealers cannot be avoided. There are a couple of programming mods for the tranny that only the dealer can do. Getting a B4 servo cover before the mod will not break the bank and is so much easier to do with the car on a lift!

Dumping the ATF from the drain plug is not a flush. I am a firm believer in refreshing the ATF every 50K miles after 100K. Either 3 'dumps' or a complete flush, but only at home. Do NOT go to a shop where they use a machine to flush the ATF! The extra pressure from the external pump can break things. It only takes 30 minutes to do a complete flush at home.

If you are going to 'dump' the ATF, I suggest the car sit overnight and dumped before starting the engine. The internals drain fluid into the sump and you might get 4 quarts out, with the dirty stuff not stirred up.
