loose timing belt / Possible dead engine? V70-XC70 1999

My sons car which I maintain is a 1999 v70 with 207K miles. The timing belt was replaced by a reliable shop at 157K miles. My son was driving to work and noticed the car was losing some power. He continued to work about another mile and parked the car. When he tried to start it after work it would not start. When I started troubleshooting I found that the timing belt loose, loose enough that it i could jump teeth. I am hoping that maybe we got lucky and all that happened was that the belt jumped a tooth or two and got the engine out of time. IF you know of a good belt replacement procedure please kick me that way.

Thanks

Your engine has VVT, so try aligning the timing marks noting the mark on the VVT side. Turn the belt additional 90 degrees and then back to the mark - that reduces tension on the VVT. Verify that the other marks are close and in good shape.

Install a new belt and tensioner, with the marks aligned. Try it out.

Thanks I order in parts. While I wait for them to arrive I will continue to read up. I have been maintaining redblocks for years and have done timing belts on them. FWD Volvos a new world to me that I need to learn. I am a real fan of this car. I have found this link.

I will take my time and be careful

Thanks

Dealers found a way to make more money -- replace the metal water pump at every timing belt change!! Even if it doesn't need it!

The tensioner roller and the idle roller need to be changed, along with the T belt, to get the car rolling again. If there is no play in the water pump, don't replace it. The pumps usually are good for 200K+, and it probably got replaced at the last T belt change. Besides, if the belt moved enough to bend valves, do you really want to throw in a new water pump?

Opened things up and found the tensioner had failed. I will read up on timing marks and make sure i get the timing correct first time. Will order a new tensioner idle roller and belt. This job is not a difficult as I made it out to be.

Thanks
