re: 2013 XC60 R Design - Loose Steering 2013

Hi All,

I am posting this for my friend. Any help would be highly appreciate it!

2013 XC60 R Design with 41,000 miles

My friend; "When turning the steering all the way left or right, there is a skip."
Me; "A skip as in jump?"
My friend; "Hard to describe maybe a grind or something."

He replaced inner, outer tie rods, 4 new tires & wheel alignment. There is no more warranty left on his SUV.

As always, thank you.

    Update I 2013

    Hi All,

His mechanic says there is a lateral movement on driver side. He's going to rebuild the rack. I will keep you posted.

Happy Friday. As always, thank you.

      Update I 2013

Before the mechanic rebuilds? the rack (normally mechanics install racks rebuilt by companies like Jorgens), I suggest to your friend that she/he approach Volvo and plead their case. IMO - A steering rack should last a lot longer than 41k! Maybe Volvo will do something as a good will gesture? Worth a shot...

    re: 2013 XC60 R Design - Loose Steering 2013

Volvo continues coverage under the new car warranty to four (4) years or 50,000 miles/80,000 kilometers, which ever occurs first.

    Why is it not covered?

I could be from lack of maintenance? Does he need PS fluid, or is it electrical?

      Hi Klaus,

Their warranty covers 3 years/36,000 miles. The power steering level is normal.

He has additional 3rd party insurance? Volvo is 4 years from original date of sale and/or 50K miles. if the car was sold in Sept 2012, then he still might be able to plead with the dealer.

Where did he have the tie rods done? Aftermarket? A good alignment?

I still suspect the PS pump. And until you or a good mechanic 'tests' it, we will not get a good description.

    re: 2013 XC60 R Design - Added information from my friend 2013

He didn't hit a large pothole.

This problem surfaced recently, play in steering first.

Than the grind or something after the inner and outer tie rods were installed.

    There's still play.

      1. Have your friend get someone to recheck the tie rod installation and alignment work.

      2. If that turns up nothing, it might worthwhile to flush and replace the PS fluid. Even though the car's mileage is low, this could possibly prevent a more serious PS pump or rack issue.

    re: 2013 XC60 R Design - Loose Steering 2013

I have a 2012 XC60R & can`t say I`ve experienced anything that would be described as a "grind". My car has 42K on it. What I do experience when I turn the steering wheel hard right/left is feeling like turning the wheel on ice as in "it`s not grabbing". However, I`ve experienced that sensation on my `03 & 04 XC 70`s too so I consider it "normal".
This probably doesn`t help at all & maybe Klaus will chime in with real info. Rich

      re: 2013 XC60 R Design - Water leak 2013

      Hi Rich,

It's all good. We can compare your car to his.

Did you have a water leak issue thru sunroof?

They replaced the sunroof rubber seal a few years ago and they fixed the problem.

Now, There is another leak by the driver side windshield.
