SC-815 Radio Doesn’t work: What to do? 850 1996

Hello All,

I own a 1996 850 GLT wagon that came equipped with a SC-815 radio that possesses a cassette and CD player. Recently the CD player will suddenly stop working. If I turn the radio off, or switch to the radio for a while, and then try the CD player again, it will work. There appears to be no rhythm or reason as to why it works or stops working. Unfortunately, Volvo no longer sells remanufactured units. My private garage has several SC-815 radios salvaged from junked 850 models. Unfortunately they too suffer the same shortcomings: the cassette player works, but the CD player doesn’t or vice-versa. At this point, all the potential radios out there are about 20 years old, so finding a functioning SC-815 unit may not be possible. These are the options I see, and I would care for anyone’s advice or comments:

1) Find a shop that repairs this radio? Can anyone recommend a shop? I reside in Fairfield, CT.

2) See if there is a modern radio/cassette/CD unit that exits that would pop right into the existing opening in the dashboard and use the same connections. Has anyone tried this substitution with success? If so could you recommend the brand unit you had installed, and if geographically near Fairfield, CT?

Thank you in advance to all who reply.

Hugh

When the radio went in my '95 854T, I purchased a replacement from Crutchfield.

The original radio is a double DIN, the replacement was a single DIN which freed up space underneath for another storage bin.
However, the replacement radio did not have a cassette. But that was fine since my daughter was using the car at the time and she was only interested in the CD player and a jack for her IPod.

My own installation was a neat and a snap using the install-kit provided by Crutchfield. It was literally plug-n-play.

      Alschnertz,

Thank you for your reply and the source where you obtained your replacement. Thanks to you and the others who have replied, I have options now.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

If the CD cleaning...:) doesn't work you could try:

    1. Junkyards parts are online nationally these days. If you want another SC-815 or another Volvo radio that will fit see if you can find a boneyard that has a radio with a warranty. I did exactly that with my 2002 Passat. Radio was shipped to me and warrantied for 6 months. Works fine, they also supplied the radio code and was fairly priced!

    2. Any local car stereo shop should be able to install a new unit that will fit if you decide to go that route instead.

      JWalker,

Thank you for the link to this website. I clicked on it and saw several radios that would be good candidates. Thank you for referring me to this website. I don’t know if I would have found it on my own.

      Hugh

Have you tried a cleaner for the CD? For around $10, it might be worth a try. Those units will get dusty in there.

      SC-815 Radio Doesn’t work: What to do? - Try E-Bay? 850 1996

      Klaus,

I pose this question to you and the others that have been kind enough to reply. What are your thoughts about obtaining a used SC-815 from E-Bay? I saw a coupled listed from $50 to over $100 dollars. Could be a “bargain” or I could be buying another “troubled” radio. Your thoughts and comments would be welcomed.

      Hugh

I've grown skeptical of anything on eBay over the years and would be reluctant to plunk down $50 to $100 for a 20-year old electronic anything that didn't have a no-hassle guarantee from a well known reputable company. EBay feedback doesn't count in my opinion. Going through the returns and resolution process is not an endeavor I want to deal with.

I too would have preferred to have my factory radio repaired, but the reality is that there are very few places around here that can make that an affordable/realistic option.

          Alschnertz,

Thank you for your reply and advice. I kind of felt the same way: am I buying a “used” headache?
