Transmission not completely going into park???? V70-XC70 1998

So the problem is this:

Our 1998, V70, with 200k on the clock has started experiencing a new problem.

When placing the car in park, and I've made sure that the shift button comes completely out, I'll take my foot off the brake and the car will lurch forward making an awful noise. When this happens I immediately will place my foot on the brake, move the transmission from park to reverse and back to park again, making sure that the button is once again out, and then take my foot off the brake and it will be fine. The car will not lurch and will just sit there as expected. I'll then turn the car off and exit the vehicle.

So can anyone tell me what is happening here and how concerned should I be, and can I fix it?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Sounds like a cable problem to me also. The button is a 'lock' at the shift knob, not a gateway to P.

The "noise" could be the parking pawl not completely dropping into the lock inside the tranny, which makes it a cable problem rather than a tranny problem. Or, a more simple solution (?) could be a failed transmission mount?

      KlausC,

The transmission mounts are less than a year old, so I'm pretty sure not them, though it can't hurt to check.

As far a cable, I'll start investigating that as well.

Thanks for everyone's input. I'll keep you posted as I dig in to her, though it may be awhile. To projects going on at the moment.

      Matt

If I had to guess, I'd bet this is a cable issue.
Either stretched (doubtful) or something has worn or become disconnected.

Some things are dangerous enough to cause one to go to a dealer - this is one of them.

What if someone else drives your car?

Be sure to warn anyone who works on your car - I would tape a note to the steering wheel as a Lot Jockey might run over someone in the garage. (They do not see the work orders.)

I'm relatively certain that no one else can help you on this.
