2003 V70 stripped mounting bolt V70-XC70

Greetings-
Earlier this evening my wife's ball joint was knocked out by a pothole causing the axle hub to ride inside the wheel. Not a problem - and I was able to get a new ball joint quicker than the tow truck arrived. Love the "new" style ball joints that don't require replacement of the entire control arm, and felt like this was an easy fix.

Popped the wheel, and struggled a bit, but was able to pull the ball joint out. Then, when installing the new one, I had a hard time lining up the grooves. It started raining, and the air is still chilly in Maine, and I may have pressed harder than I should have. I was cheating, and using the impact wrench, to seat the new ball joint. It wouldn't pull in all the way, and then the front bolt stripped in the hole.

Not an ideal situation, and now I am really worried about finding a safe solution (hopefully short of replacing the hub). Has anyone else done this? Tap and drill a slightly larger one? Can this be drilled through? If anyone has a solution I am all ears!

I am afraid you will need to replace the hub. Even junk yard versions are expensive. That is an aluminum housing and you can never use the bolts to 'press' in the ball joint.

If you go down to #7 by Firstvolvo, click on the attached link and download the PDF. Really good job.

Keeping it running is better than buying new

Thanks Klaus! I was able to tap it out to an M12, which is the max the balljoint would accept. Lots of loctite, and an extra locknut to get me through until I can source one.

That was an important lesson to learn, in spite of running volvos for years.

I cracked the cv boot when I was working on it, so she is due to go back up in the air this weekend. However, I may luck out - she refused to start tonight, and no pressure at the rail - so maybe it is time to get a new one!
