Right headlight 9006 insulation just fell off. Left is better 850 1995

Well it was the right bulb that failed (hotter?). The failure was Id's by the warning light on the dash. For years that light would go on sometimes when I hit the brakes. Lights always seemed to work. Back to the fronts, I was glad to see the left wiring seems perfect but I was on alert and didn't handle it very much. I replaced both bulbs yesterday. Car has 121K miles so hot huge hours for a 1995. Mercedes had an issue with insulation that was biodegradable - that sure sounds like a bad idea if you are the type to keep cars for 40 years. So I'm just posting my observation here. I wrapped the wires with black electrical tape, it seemed likely that they could touch and short out. There is a liquid insulation in a can which I plan to have on hand. I'll probably try to buy the headlight connector some day if this liquid insulation doesn't look to be of quality.

The entire 1995 850 is biodegradable. The foam is first, followed by all of the plastic, and then the sheathing on the wiring.

You are correct about the 14V going through the headlight wires. Which is why my DRLs are turned off.

Did you know that if you turn the screw on the headlight switch to 1pm, the tail lights don't come on as part of the DRL? At least that is what it says in the manual.

Of course, if you live or drive anywhere in Pennsylvania you need the headlights on anyway. Headlights are mandatory in construction zones, and what state isn't full of construction zones?

      DRLs 850 1995

I had read the manually carefully dec 1994 and was aware that it might be possible to disable the DRLs. Since my insurance company gives a discount for DRLs (could be NY insurance BS law) I leave them on and think it's a good idea.

When I realized a headlight was out I moved the light switch from the 9pm to 10pm position so any passing cop wouldn't stop me and give me a ticket. There was still daylight. Same thing next day when driving to the parts shop. So that10pm must be the parking light position. You can forget to turn them off. I drive my under 3600 lb 80s cars with the headlights on , hoping it will prevent an accident.

I didn't say anything about 14v but i did measure the voltage on the right harness and it was about 14.

since I hope to keep my 850 another 20 years maybe I should buy some harnesses and keep-em in the freezer. Unfortunately a lot of Volvo parts are going No LOnger AVAILABLE. I can relate to the Cubans.

      Merci
