Automatic Trasmission XC90

I just bought a 2014 XC90 to replace my 2004 V70. Based on this site discussions, is there no way to check the level of the transmission fluid or change the fluid ???

Thanks.

Some of the 6 cylinder XC90's have a standpipe up inside the drain plug that is used to gauge the fluid level. Look for a smaller screw/plug centered in the larger drain plug. You remove that center screw and fill the trans with fluid until it starts to drip out of that center screw hole. Then replace the center screw. You want the fluid at operating temperature in order to achieve the proper level.

Check this out. Not sure if it's applicable to your model year or not:

Thanks for the feedback on the newer transmissions ....Must say I am disappointed that Volvo is cutting corners, etc.

The same is true for other European cars. The dipstick O rings tend to dry out and let in air, or let out hot vapors. Remember, the car was designed to run at 130mph for hours, not for commuting short distances or hauling trailers constantly.

I do wish Volvo would consider changing their guarantee period to 100K miles, or 10 years. That would help the brand name immensely and keep the resale value from falling like a rock.

Just think, if they were to guarantee their cars for 10 yrs/100,000 miles, they could no longer say things like the trans fluid doesn't need changing.

"...That would help the brand name immensely and keep the resale value from falling like a rock...."

The flip side is that rapid depreciation is what allows people like me to drive Volvos. :) :)

Volvo's position: Check automatic transmission fluid level only if an external leak is identified. Volvo recommends changing transmission fluid every 50,000 miles/80,000 kilometers, only on vehicles used for towing, or when a message appears in the instrument panel text window.

Because there is no dipstick for the tranny, the level can only be checked by removing the fill plug. And then the car must be completely level, a bit hard to achieve using jack stands (4).

Note that the change interval is 50K miles. I would assume that city, stop and go traffic would be just as hard as trailing a light trailer.
