Mud flap installation V70-XC70

I have owned my 2015 XC70 for five weeks now.

One Volvo accessory I would like to add is mud flaps (although it seems to me splash guards might be a better term for this item).

I have seen various installation instructions for the Volvo OE part. Some of them call for a pop rivet in addition to the screws that come with the kit. I do not want to drill additional holes in the car.

Is this pop rivet part of an older installation method? One installation guide I found on line did not mention a rivet nor did a you tube video I watched. Both of these were for model year 2015.

So what's the deal with the pop rivet?

If the mud flap install requires taking the inner fender liner loose, could the pop rivet be used to re-attach the inner liner???

      I don't think so.

There are three screws that need to be removed and these, in part, fasten the liner. They are replaced by three presumably longer screws that fasten the mud flap and the liner.

For some models the rivet is shown going through the flap into the rocker panel. This is a good idea. It would stabilize the flap.

It just seems like, "Drill hole, insert pop rivet," without a bit of prep is an invitation to rust.

But I have just found (again, and I saved it this time) the installation instruction for the XC70 and it does not mention the rivet.

So perhaps I am needlessly concerned. However, the official Volvo exploded diagram for the correct part features a rivet. On the other hand the pics at most vendors sites show only plastic screws.

I am making a mountain out of a mole hill. I will just order the kit and see what arrives.

        My experience was:

The Volvo mudflap kit came with replacement pop-rivets. It required the larger size pop-rivet tool.
Borrow one from a snowmobile shop if you don't want to buy one.

The only drilling (1/8" or 3mm bit as I recall) was to remove existing pop-rivets.
        There were no screws involved.

This was for a P2 V70. Your car is a 2015 and could be different.
