A friend of my wife's just gave her two Volvo M10 filters from her dad's garage (cleaning it out after his death). Does anyone know where I can look up whether these fit my 1996 20-valve non-turbo 850?

Or does anyone happen to know? I didn't have much luck wandering around in the Google forest.

Use an aluminum washer instead of a copper one.

I store a new washer inside the plastic cover of each of my oil filters.

Why aluminum? I know aluminum "moves" more easily than copper - does it seal better because of that?

When the price of copper went up, Volvo moved to aluminum which fit the aluminum pan better. The copper is reusable if you heat it up between uses, not the aluminum.

The metal canister oil filters have been used by volvo since the 1960's, interchangeable from the B16 engine to the 5 cyl 20 valve. It is only the new models that have the Eco friendly plastic covers.

Thanks. Turns out I misread the label, and that the part number is actually 3517857-3. Armed with that number, I found multiple interchange charts.
