timing mark on crank = TDC ? V70-XC70 2004

Questions on resetting the cams, crank and vvt hubs:

When the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket lines up with the pointer on the oil pump is that TDC or just a reference point ?

When the timing marks on the camshaft sprockets were lined up with the timing marks on the belt cover the camshaft holding tool could not be fit. The cams had to be turned ~15° to get the bolt in the two tool halves. Consequently the engine is no longer at TDC or the reference point. Where should the cam sprocket timing marks point when the camshaft holding tool is in place ?

Thanks

Greg

The timing marks are a reference point, not TDC.

Conundrum isn't it? I would think that you paint marked the sprocket and cam shaft center before removing the sprocket.

Are you still getting P0017(?) codes? Or is it just not running right?

Keeping it running is better than buying new

Hi Klaus,

I installed the cam holding tool, marked the sprockets and head before removing the timing belt, removed the belt, turned the CVVT units ccw to the stop and marked them again. When I put it together I lined up the second set of marks and tightened the center bolts, made sure the paint marks still lined up and readjusted as necessary. Then I turned the sprockets back to the first mark, counted out the number of cogs (18) between the timing marks and put the belt on.

I'm still getting the P0016 but the car runs great. The first code (P0026) was that the intake actuator did not move as expected. Now it is P0016 all the time.

I'm thinking about turning up one of the crankshaft stops and see where the crank sprocket lines up. The stop tool has a heavy loop on it that appears to be a depth stop. The tricky part will be getting the chamfer correct.

Too bad the timing mark on the crank is not TDC. I could find that with a dial indicator.

Greg

You said, "I installed the cam holding tool, marked the sprockets and head before removing the timing belt, removed the belt, turned the CVVT units ccw to the stop and marked them again. I thought the procedure calls for lining up the marks (two camshaft sprocket, one crankshaft) AFTER passing them CW by a half turn THEN aligning them while going CCW.

When I did mine that's all I did. I did not do any gear cog counting or movement of anything after the old belt was off.

Yup and when you take the sprockets off the camshafts have to held on the back end. The camshafts have to be turned a little to get the tool to fit. When you take the timing belt off the crankshaft timing mark is not lined up with the pointer. Putting it back together is done somewhat blind. I think the solution is to paint mark the crank sprocket in addition to the cam sprockets.

Tasca has the crankshaft alignment tool for $61 delivered. Should be here in a few days.

Good morning Greg.

Unfortunately, I have some bad news for you. The gauge you've purchased is actually an out of date part number, per Volvo. The new part number (9997005) is out of stock and on a back order with an ETA of 11/21/17. Because I cannot get this item for you within 30 days, it is our policy to cancel your order & issue you a refund back to the method with which you'd paid.

My apologies for the inconvenience & I hope you'll check back with us around that date to see if we have updated information. Have a great weekend!

Regards,
Joy

Looks like it is back to the lathe... I don't suppose Joy knows what this tool is used for or why someone would be unlikely to wait until December to see if it shows up.
