Hello All,

I have a 1999 V70 XC with nearly 187,000 miles. Normally, when I push the button in the door to release the gas tank door, I just hear the sound of the door flap opening. Suddenly, when I release the door flap, I hear a “spinning noise” coming from the solenoid. This is a completely new sound. The door flap still opens, but I am concerned this made be an indication the solenoid is on its way out.

Has anyone else had this experience? Thanks in advance to all who respond.

    Take a good look at the pin that holds the door shut. On two of out 850s, the soft surround of the pin had curled up a bit and caused the pin to stick. I straightened out the surround and lubricated it with silicone spray.

    On the first car, I removed the component before I saw the problem. On the second, I was able to correct the problem with a dental instrument.

    On my station wagon, I had to remove interior pieces all the way to the back seat to address the problem. This venture started at the top, middle of the rear opening.

    On out 850s, there was a wire loop connected to the solenoid that could be accessed through the cover to the tail light area.

    It might even be in the owner's manual.

      Jim,

      I wish I read your response sooner. Maybe I’m being lazy. I demonstrated the “noise” to my mechanic. He said the solenoid was on its way out and would eventually fail.

      I just ordered a used one from Erie Vo-Vo for $45 delivered. A new solenoid from Volvo is over $200.

      Maybe I should have tried taking the panel apart first? Thank you for your detailed response. You demonstrated why I post questions on this forum.

    Just don't start a long trip with the tank at 6 gallons left.

    When it gets warmer out, and more fun to work on your car, pull the right side rear panel off and inspect the works. It is the same for 1998-2000. You may want to leave a little string attached so that you can pull the release with the panel in place.
