Mystery squeal (93 850) 850

As long time listeners will know, I've had an issue with my 850 for a while. An annoying squeal when the car is cold, or when I turn on AC. If I push pressure on the tensioner, the noise diminishes/goes away.

So far I've:

replaced the belt
replaced the idler pulley and tensioner pulley
created several new swear words.

With the belt off, the pulleys all spin and don't make much noise.

Now with both of the new pulleys (tensioner and idle) and the longer serpentine belt, the squeal should be gone, right?

Nope. Still there.

I've seen a few videos online talking about alignment of the pulleys, so that is the next thing I'm going to check. Are they easy to adjust?

Does anyone have a serpentine belt they'd suggest? I saw a video talking about gatorback belts, but I'm not sure if they offer one for 850s.

How many miles on your car?

I have had several old cars (Actually almost every car that I have owned!) that had alternators that were noisy when they had to work hard after start-up. Although, I do not remember any prolonged squeals.

You might run your battery down quite a bit and see if the squeal gets worse.

Perhaps a good alternator guy can look at, or bench test yours to see if it squeals.

I like Gates belts - If you go to their site, see why modern belts do not crack - they can be worn out and look great. Modern serpentine belts wear out just like tire tread. You need a gauge to check the belt. Gates will send you one for free.

Sadly, the techs at my dealer do not have gauges - they assume that you have changed the belt according to Volvo's schedule.

Do you have a pick&pull close to you? I would try a tensioner from a 'newer' 850/70, just in case you have a weak spring.

I do, but the 93's are a unique beast. I have to use the tensioner from a stick shift (and i just bought a new one with this recent work I did).

      Here is an update:

I replaced the "long" belt with the OEM "short" belt, and the squealing/squeak greatly diminished.

my hypothesis is that the belt for the 93's needs to be the short ones. :)
