Air guard/skid plate 850 1993

Ok, so my squeal hasn't gone away (I now suspect the car is possessed by singing ghost. Or maybe it's a pulley somewhere. I suspect that the belt is just loose enough and the squeal is coming from the crank shaft).

Anyway among the many things that are quirky about the 93 850, the skid plate/air guard is another one apparently.

IPD doesn't sell it and its NLA. I've looked online (amazon and ebay for example) and the one that comes up doesn't look like mine does. It's close, but not exact.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001HIAVZS/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

It's just enough different that I'm not confident about buying it.

Does anyone have any insider help with locating one? I.e., "Yeah, I have a 93 and I bought it here", etc?

Go to Gates site to see an explanation about the newer serpentine belts.

They do not crack, but they wear out just like a tire tread. Then they slip.

They will send you a free gauge to check the depth of the grooves in your serpentine belt. Evidently there is even a smart phone app to look at the grooves!

My dealer's Volvo techs do not use gauges, they assume that you change the belts on schedule.

Go to an indie garage, many have the gauge one needs to check the belt. Mine even has a display to show belt wear, provided by Gates.

As for your squeal -check the timing belt cover for a warped condition. Mine was deformed and rubbing on the crank. Replaced it and no noise now!

      Hm....I'll check that this weekend.

The reason why I'm unsure of the cause, if I put a wrench in the tensioner, and move it so it puts MORE tension on the belt, it quiets down.

did your sound go away once the car warmed up?

Hot or cold made noise. Most noticeable at idle.

Hm, don't think thats my issue then. Once my car warms up the noise stops (usually 5-10 minutes of driving).

Yesterday, it was hideously loud (I'm in Portland and it was 80+ degrees). But today, it didn't register much of a noise.

          It's so inconsistent.

My 1993 air guide was original, with ripped center and broken bolt hole. Found a brand new guide, that came with new clips, at Culver City Volvo classic parts. $91 total with shipping and CA tax. Well boxed OEM part. Easy job and fit perfect. It took 6-7 weeks to get, but they are still available. Contact information below:

    P/N 1372791 $ 74.12 Air guide Genuine Classic Part"

If they can't help the link below has three more dealers to try. These do show a higher price than I paid in September 2017, but Steve at Culver City may give you a better price.
